Just watched the latest one, am I losing my marbles or does it feel like between the early seasons and the later ones we're watching two different programmes?
It might seem that way to a show only watcher I suppose. The books maintain a balance between magic & myth on the one hand and gritty historical fantasy on the other.
The show played down all of the magic & myth in the early seasons in many ways. From having Bran be the only stark kid who could Warg, to missing out most of Old Nan's stories, and missing out many of Dany's visions/dreams.
They couldn't maintain that approach as we approached the end game as the story isn't actually "a game of thrones" it is " a song of ice and fire". It may not ultimately matter who sits upon the iron throne and the principal significance of all the conflict we have witnessed may just be the massive loss of trained soldiers right before the ultimate battle.
That is not to say this is a LOTR style fight between good and evil. Listen carefully to what that red priestess is saying and it is clear she is no Gandalf!.
I recommended to a colleague that if they read anything in the series just read the first book. Between Ned's thoughts and flashbacks and old Nans tales you have most of the core story set up in one book.

Are the boobs really that good?
Trust me. I think we are talking better than True Detective S1. Which is high praise indeed, as you can imagine. To say that I'll be disappointed is an understatement. Remember Sansa watching her dad getting his head chopped off? That'll be me.
Then I'll get angry.
