This was a bit disappointing, it had a half decent idea and a good cast was expecting something much more.

The story never really developed, we have the Rock after leaving prison going after the people who set-up and killed his brother.

He doesn't have to do much to find them, he's given a list and simply calls round and shoots them, the Police don't ever seem to do a lot to stop him either. There's a hired gun thrown into the mix but his character is too weak to pay attention to.

The Rock was The Rock, but Bill Bob should have been way more awesome and Carla Gugino way more feisty and kick ass, they're certainly able to deliver in other films.

I think that maybe if the film had had a better director it could have been so much more.

5/10
This is the only good thing to come out of that movie:

Have to agree with you. An utter pile of pooh.
However I liked the Scum reference when Reagan filled a sock full of batteries to crack someones head open with.

The first Sweeney film wasn't up to much either but the second... Bit hardcore to say the least, they only ever show the cut version and that very rarely.

Chappie,

Watched this last night, it's bad rather than terrible, 4/10

Spoilers follow:

There's not much original about it. It borrows much of the premise from Robocop - the world's turned to st, Police are out numbered and out gunned so they look to robotics - the slight twist here is the completely autonomous solution wins over the one with the human element - but the big nasty tank on legs solution is basically ED209.

The plot does split with Robocop after the first few minutes of ultra violence and joins with Short Circuit and most of the film is like that, only towards the end does it ramp up with a showdown between Chappie and Ed209 (sorry he's called MOOSE in this).

The ending is nonsense.

But that's no really it's problem, loads of films are complete rip-offs, Fast and Furious is basically Point Break with Cars for example - but the worst thing is that they had a really good cast - Huw Jackman, Dev Patel, Sharlto Copley and Sigourney Weaver - but they gave the bulk of the job to two half-wit South African rappers / singers (neither of which they do well) called Ninja and ¥o-Landi Vi$$er - they're a couple of walking clichés, who act like you might when you're 14 in your bedroom and cringe almost to death thinking about at 15, they're bloody terrible.

I've no idea why people keep saying this, I can only assume they have a lack of knowledge of popular culture. It looked far more like a Madcat or similar. If you want to say it was a rip-off, at least say it was a rip-off of Mechwarrior.

As for the film, I quite liked it. I spend too much time on this thread perhaps, as I was expecting it to be awful from what I've read on here. The director shoots action scenes superbly, but he does tend to try and write a game-changing ending that is rushed into literally the last minute of the film. The ending of Elysium was exactly the same. It just jars and leaves you with a nasty taste, and a poorer opinion of the film than you'd have otherwise had.

Yes the rapper bods were annoying but I applaud the director for trying things differently. Overall I didn't find it disappointing, more quirky. I am looking forward to his attempt at Alien, though you can almost predict what he'll get right and what he'll get wrong. I think the action scenes will be worthy of Cameron, and I wouldn't say that about any other director. He's in love with machinery and precision and firepower in the same way Cameron is. The action scenes are the standout in District 9, Elysium and this. I just wish he'd improve at the other stuff.

Probably because 99% of people have zero clue what a 'MechWarrior' is and if people keep missing the connection, then it's probably because 'MechWarrior' isn't that well known or popular, so hardly "popular culture"?

Anyway, Google leads me to believe MechWarrior is about 100m tall?

I remember someone said in an interview that it was designed to look menacing and stupid at the same time. Which it does well.

I caught Fury Road last night. My god it was poor. The stunts and visuals were great but that's where it ends. Hardy, who is a good actor normally, was terrible. At one point he switched to his character on Lawless and just did a throat vibration instead of acting.

They lost the whole menace of the original movie and made it more comic book. There's enough Marvel movies out there to cater to that audience. It was a 2 hour car chase.

I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear there's a sequel on the way next year then? smile

I'm with you though, mind numbingly stupid and a terrible waste of a top quality cast.

I loved it, don't get the hate at all. The tell is right there the moment they meet; it's not in the least bit stupid.
I agree - I liked it too but it has divided my office down the middle. It was "too fast" for some people to keep up with. wink

Taken 2. I like the first film, as a bad but good arse kicking the baddies film. This one wasn't the same, somehow. The daughter who hadn't passed her driving test, driving the car in the chase, doing reverse j turns and all that jazz. Nah. And Liam Neeson's handgun (that she drops down the chimney to him) has a million bullets. Not bothering with Taken 3.

Really? I think that says a lot more about your co-workers than the film itself TBH. smile

Not in the least bit stupid? The plot is so full of holes it was almost transparent. I actually watched it again recently as thought perhaps I'd expected too much from it first time around. Nope, if anything I disliked it even more.

I thought Neeson was picking up and using the handguns of the bad guys.

Also, watched Jupiter Ascending a while back. If I were to give it an analogy in comparison to piece of turd, it would be one that was excreted, baked in the sun for 3 weeks, trodden on, then rained on, baked in the sun for another 2 weeks then turned white. 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001/10
