Jupiter Ascending

It was bought as a gift so I had to sit through it all. A form or torture.

One of the silliest plots imaginable, but that alone would not be enough to condemn it. The special effects are not too bad, the script is worse than the plot - and that it a problem for me.

The acting was quite good but there was nothing for them to do. They didn't change, there was no development, and no depth. The villains, well I've seen scarier snails.

If it had been shorter, it would not have been so bad.

It was impossible to 'get into'.
Watched this last night. So bad, Eddie Redmayne was either whispering or screaming, Channing Tatum had zero charisma and Mila Kunis ergh terrible.

The Bling Ring.

Based on the true story of a bunch of spoilt kids who would go and rob wealthy celebrity's houses while they were away. The wife chose it, and from the trailer I thought it'd be a satire on wealth, celebrity, and the grotesque reality that some people have so much stuff that they don't even notice when huge chunks of it goes missing. Kind of like the TV show Episodes.

It was bloody awful. The first twelve hours of it follow this format:
1. It's night time.
2. Shot of kids opening an unlocked window/door.
3. Montage of them picking up jewellery and saying "oh my god" a lot.
4. Cut to bar scene where laugh and take selfies.
5. Repeat. Over and over.

At the very least you'd think the burglary scenes might have some tension but the film doesn't even try beyond the lad half-heartedly saying, "we should leave" every now and again (which is barely acknowledged).

I've since read that the film's superficial style is itself a satire on the superficial nature of its subject but that's utter bks, and a lazy attempt to justify a dull and witless film with no character, style or ideas.

Perhaps being directed by somebody who grew up in that world means she was unable to see the absurdity of it.

And the wife hated it too.
The Bling Ring wasn't the best film, but it do what it set out to do.

In reading your post I was about to reply that you'd missed the point, but you've read what the point was.

The director's other films, Lost in Translation and Somewhere do the same thing. The experience you get as the viewer is from being 'with' the protagonists. In those two films you feel the same tedium of their lives. In The Bling Ring, you see first hand that the protagonists are vacuous and their lives revolve around celebrity.

To the protagonists, of what is a true-life story, they did the burglaries in a throwaway teenage fashion, so there shouldn't be the tension of a heist.

I must admit the I thought it a 6 at best simply because the subject matter could not have been made much more interesting - it is essentially 'Celebrity obsessed teens knick celebrity clothes and jewellery and wear them and live the high life'.

Agreed, also no chemistry between the two lead roles.
I didn't think Mila was that bad 'till last night.

Some good CGI, but that's about it. Paper thin plot, terrible acting. Eddie Redmayne seemed to be redoing his stellar performance of an ALS patient, for a villain??

So you didn't like Blues Brothers, Trading Places, Spies Like Us or Ghostbusters?

You sir have no soul.
I can appreciate BB but never really found it funny. I think Ghostbusters is fantastic as is Trading Places and Spies Like Us. I also love Sneakers which no-one seems to have seen.

My favourite though is Grosse Point Blank, think that is an absolute cracker, must have watched it 50 times.

I've seen Sneakers, quite liked it.

Other way round on GPB and BB. GPB I can take or leave but I absolutely love BB (less said about the sequel the better)

I've never liked anything with Dan Aykroyd in (Trading Places I thought was a bit crap, ditto Blues Brothers)
This is why there should only be one thread wobble
OK then, for reasons I don't remember I overlooked Ghostbusters which I think is great.

Trading Places isn't terrible, but I don't find it great either. But I can't get on with Blues Brothers at all and Great Outdoors was worse than that

I hope I've clarified myself!

Criticised Jupiter Ascending but finished by saying: Tomorrow we have Interstellar. I'll let you know, but hopefully not on this thread.
I'm back. The best thing I can say about Interstellar is that the acting was much better than Jupiter, the visuals were better as well, but what destroyed it for me was the absolute rubbish science and the absolutely dreadful plot.

There are so many plot holes that it was difficult to keep up with them. If I was into self punishment, I'd watch it again and list them.

It has 8.7 on IMDb. How is that? It was dreadful. That's two hours wasted.

Dear god! It was the worst sci-fi for plot I've seen in ages.

Yes, I have.

I think it was the most disappointing film, given the hype and, it is fair to say, my expectations. The Alien series, especially the first two, was a classic. It was a bit silly but it was also exciting.

With Interstellar, there was no attempt to comply with the laws of physics. I'm all for a bit of latitude, treating the laws as guidelines, but this was fantasy made up to be scifi. Kids' stuff.

What is odd is that the rating on IMDb is 8.7. It makes reading the reviews pointless.

Try the veal Rotten Tomatoes - they give both expert and audience ratings and reviews.
I think it's got bad reviews due to huge expectations from the audiences, rather than being very bad in it's own right. Despite the plotholes, it's beautifully shot and has a genuine idea - D'où Venons Nous / Que Sommes Nous / Où Allons Nous

Handing over to my 9 year old nephew for this one...

Fantastic Four - Awful

In his words..."nothing happened for hours, then there was a fight, it was rubbish"

Considering he is an absolute superhero/comic book addict who will absorb absolutely anything related to Marvel/DC, this is a damning review if ever there was one!

I was just going to write something similar. Don't do a superhero movie where it takes half the film before they gain their powers, then the next 40 not using them before one fight in the last 15 minutes. Dreadful.

I think in the FF thread there is an article explaining why it's a mess.
The studio baulked at the director's vision and stepped in and fked it up royally.
