RIPD

My wife bought it (along with Pain and Gain, she couldn't decide which apparently..)

It was exactly like a MIB reboot, but without the charm and charisma of the MIB characters.

And what's going on with Bridges these days, can't understand a word he mumbles!
that's the sad thing about RiPD - it could/should have been great, some of the set-pieces were fantastic as were some of the SFX... but it just fell flat frown

New Years Eve. With so many big names in it I thought the Rotten Tomatoes rating of 7% from the critics must be wrong.... It wasn't. It's not often I turn a movie off before the end.

On the plane to Bangkok I watched some good films and:

Last Vegas - Kline, de Niro Freeman, Douglas - joke about getting old, as old as the plot and script 3/10

Paranoia - really st movie about oh I can't be bothered, derivative with anticlimactic and obvious ending 2/10, 1 of those for Amber Heard. Wtf was Gary Oldman thinking? How is Liam Hemsworth a paid actor?

Now You See Me. Magicians/Heist movie, decent cast except Jesse Eisenberg who I can't abide. Tries to be too clever for its own good and towards the end, I really couldn't care less what happens. Quite why Caine and Freeman thought this was a good script is a mystery.

3/10

Rush - now i'm not gonna say it's really bad. It's just that relentless level of cheesiness typical to each and any of Howards' films. The poor attempts of well English spoken Bruhl imitating Lauda's accent, Hemsworth without even trying to be anything than himself, some of the dialogues that just can't be emitted through race drivers' mouths. That terrible, in all senses of the word, CGI crash. It was so on the verge of being the second Driven that it took me three attempts and a week to finish it.

However, there were a few moments, mostly race scenes, that just prevented me to hate it. And the fact that such a movie was made at all gives it some credit too. 5/10
I think I approached this film differently from most PH'ers in that I have absolutely no interest in any sport whatsoever and F1 generally seems about as pointless as they come, however I was aware of the events the film was based on.
I viewed it purely as a film and took it on its own merits as I couldn't give a stuff if it was accurate or not, I thought the characters were great and inviting, the whole thing was an excellent piece of drama. Given that it was about a subject I had no interesting to make it so enthralling was I thought, impressive.

After earth..my god

Let's forget will smith wrote a story where he is the hardest bestest at everything. Bestest space scientist, bestest space surgeon, saved every earthling single handedly. Has no fear, this man can do everything. It's a veritable orgasm of vanity.

So the rest of the plot. Well a boy who has issues with his father has to fight nature.....blah blah blah you've seen it all before.

Positives. It looks good.

Bad points this kid is the luckiest boy alive. Right from the start the only two people to survive a space ship crash just happen to be him and his dad and it gets worse from there.

Just don't

Should have watched this first

Latest crapfest I watched was White House Down. I actually enjoyed the more straightforward tone of Olympus Has Fallen, but here the attempted comedy just falls flat . The bad guys aren't very interesting and manage to take over the place way too easily, CGI is poor in places and the left wing message is hammered over your head throughout (the baddies are PMCs wanting to get America to start another war - subtle). It's directed by the same person who did Independence Day, which is one of my all time favourite guilty pleasures, but everything he's done since has nowhere near the level of enjoyable cheese

Another one for After Earth.

We have just switched it off at 25 minutes in. Nice to look at, but the acting is terrible and so stilted. I like Will Smith even in crap films, but I found this unwatchable.

It's like Hollywood execs gave a complete amateur a huge budget and told them to just get on with it.

Contender for one of the worst films of 2013?

First 25 minutes was the best part. Gets far worse from then. I stuck with because it was so bad.

Only God Forgives (2013) with Ryan Gosling and Kristin Scott Thomas.

2/10

WTF was it about?

Moody scenes for 20-25 minutes, Gosling not speaking/acting then gratuitous violence.

I have an open mind to films and their subject matter, but this left me wondering what the director was wanting to achieve.

Maybe it was not for me.

It was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

The Counsellor.

Terrible film. Dull, so many pointless long winded conversations and pointless characters.

I dozed off on the sofa this evening and woke to the sounds of Segal smacking someone hard. I've come to the conclusion that if you've seen one of his films, you've seen them all. The only thing that seems to change from one to the other is the thickness of his neck and the number of leather hides required to cover his frame.
