NI to pay £2m to Dowler family + a further £1m to charity. Is that admitting guilt wink
The full amount should be paid to charity rather than lining the family's pockets. I see their lawyers are pushing for £3.5m...

Is the Met not a bit too involved to be investigating?

I wonder why it isn't enough to stop the Met chasing the Guardian, which led in the revellations when the Met themselves, or at least some of those at the top, didn't want to proceed with the matter.

Despite all the 'without prejudice' that will prefix the handover of the cheque, I doubt there is anyone in the world whose conclusion as to what this massive, tremendously big, payout says about NI's culpability differs from mine.
As you say. Without prejudice in this context means bugger all.... Damned I do believe is the word.

I imagine they would swap all that money for the thought that their privacy has been spared. The money can do a great deal in their lives, but it won't undo the doubt in their minds. I don't for a moment think that those who did this have even a shred of understanding of what it must be like to be them. I don'f for a moment think they have any compassion or understanding of their plight.

It's almost as boring too.
This will be talked of in years to come. There will be books written about it. We will learn some things tht were kept from us, but not all.

Murdoch is the biggest media mogul in the world. He's been hit, and badly.

Boring? You comapre this to the Ferrari/Todt years?
Not really boring - I was being facetious.

It might very well bring the empire down - hopefully before F1 moves to Sky.
Not a hope on either count. News Corp is here to stay, whether Rupert is alive or dead or any other Murdoch family member are involved with NC for that matter.
I'd disagree. NC without the Murdochs will just be another media corporation run by faceless beancounting drones; the lights will be on, but no-one home. The papers will be sold off as they don't make any money and Sky will continue its current trajectory toward the bottom of the barrel, squabbling with ITV for the privelege of being watched by mouthbreathers as the news channel slowly withers and dies.

Apologies if this has been answered already but in the case of the 7/7 victims what would N.I be hoping to get from listening to their voicemails?

Did I hear on the radio news that they're also being investigated now for hacking Jade Goody's phone when she was dying of cancer?

May sound awful but I am suspicious of the accusers (her mothers) reasons for contacting Max Clifford being money rather than justice motivated

The Dowler family are gonna make 2m apparantly - who wouldn't in her situation?

Her daughter is dead - maybe there is no real justice to be had - but a payout will be sweet as wel las hurting them in their pockets.

If it was me in their place I'd hit them for every penny I could. It is nothing to do with justice, just revenge. Inflict a bit of pain, or rather as much as you can against these rich and normally so untouchable people who treat everyone else with contempt.

In their world money speaks. You can buy politicians to ease your way through life. They are cheaper, in more ways than one, than £2m. So this will hurt a little.

The Dowlers probably think that even by costing NI £2m they will make no difference. Big corporations will go on breaking the law, mostly untouchable. But for this brief moment NI have had to pay for their contempt of the rights of others.

I for one am glad they've stung NI. They had it coming.

I assume the Dowler payout will, however, be accompanied by the requirement that they do not pursue the matter any further, write or give interviews about the incident which would be damaging to News International and so on. Keeping the story out of the pubic gaze is surely worth £2m (otherwise the money would not have been offered), and as such ‘revenge’ on NI is not served by accepting?

Except the Dowler's are also starting proceedings against News Corp in the US.

Murdoch Exec on the way out as WSJ massages figures... (bit rich considering the source - but still)

Looks like things are going from bad to worse for poor Rupert.

Wonder how much this will cost him? The last time it was almost $2b.

The BBC's Robert Peston says the couple had a pre-nuptial agreement and have held shares in trust for their children.
