I would like to know how they got hold of her phone number and the person who gave it to the scum reporter should own up.

One of the reasons why a lot of people will be a little worried this morning. Its well known that the papers have paid informants in the police and have had for a very long time. If they have been running those types of sources, I would guess that they probably have informants in all the telecoms companies too. I would be surprised to find out that if an editor wanted your mobile number, he/she/it could get it within two phone calls.

I would also be very surprised if they didn't have informers at the National Lottery too, just for all those pesky types who don't want anyone to know they've won. I mean, after all, the public have paid for the tickets, its their right to know who's won.rolleyes

I've not followed the story closely but was vaguely aware of the hacking accusation so what exactly did he do? Quite interested to know, if he didn't 'hack' why are they so keen to prosecute him? Apart from any embarrassing holes he may have highlighted what harm did he do?

As an aside we couldn't compare the two anyway. One is wholly within these shores while the other falls foul of our 'special relationship' rolleyes with the US.

Rebekkah Wade said as precisely that in the Select Committee (?) investigation. ISTR, the spinners at News Int backtracked somewhat afterwards.

Previously, the assembled hordes of gutter press were outside the police station when Neil and Christine Hamilton came out of it following their arrest for alleged sexual assault of Nadine Milroy-Sloane. As they'd attended by prior appointment, you have to wonder quite how it leaked...

You also have to wonder why the Police haven't been very co-operative with the other victims of this hacking scandal - e.g. the George Galloway side of this (yes, I know he's a twunt).

Also, the police have tried to under-investigate this whole affair.

It's not looking good for the Met.

I was thinking the exact same thing and as to why they would do this

maybe its the can of worms all this is threatening to open up for the police.

I'm sure this will go on and on even after a conviction has been obtained.

I don't see this as a technical issue, where hacking a password-protected mailbox is in some way more offensive than one that is not. Is a 13 year-old girl entitled to privacy in her conversations?.. In fact are we all not entitled to basic privacy any more?. The utter moral bankruptcy and callous disregard for this kid and her family are just appalling.
We seem to have devolved to a level where we now have to assume that we have to take extaordinary precautions to keep our private lives private, surrounded by firewalls, recorded in our every move. I do not see this as progress, and these bottom-feeders should be given a taste of their own publicity and see how they like it.

And weren't they all somehow outside exactly the right Police station when John Leslie emerged blinking into the light after being charged?

If you want to show your disgust at the News of the World here's what you can do:
Roy Greenslade said:
1. Boycott the paper. Treat it just as the people of Merseyside did when The Sun ran its infamous Hillsborough story in 1989 following the deaths of 96 Liverpool supporters.

2. Pressure advertisers and media buyers not to buy space in the News of the World and to withdraw ads they've already booked.

In last Sunday's issue, the advertisers included Tesco, Aldi, Currys, the Body Shop and Xtra-vision. If you're reading this in Ireland, there were also ads for SuperValu, Bulmers, Aer Lingus, Steam-Packet.com, Cost Plus Sofas, Steel Tech Sheds and Joe Duffy Motors.
Pre-written emails, addresses etc. are here.

More suggestions here.

The statement by Rebekah Brooks on phone hacking is fascinating reading and deserves to be read closely.

There's an ongoing libel case at the moment where the Sunday Times stated they were given classified documents relating to a supposed criminal by a police 'whistleblower'.

The Sunday Times wants to use the confidential documents, some of which are alleged to have been leaked to the paper by a police whistleblower, as part of its defence in the libel trial, listed to be heard at the high court next month
