I resent paying for the unemployed and for overseas aid. At least I'll get some enjoyment out of watching the Olympics on the telly. If you could arrange for long term benefits and overseas aid to be stopped, then I'll support you on the Olympics.
We all have things we see as a waste of taxpayers money. I just don't think this is one of them.

lots of people have benefitted from being employed on construction projects

lots of people are going to benefit from the 11,000 homes that are part of the Olympic legacy

lots of people will benefit from the improvements to public transport infrastrfucture

lots of people will benefit from the new urban park which will be left behind after the Games

lots of people will benefit from the world class sports facilties which will be adapted for use by sports clubs and the local community

and of course lots of people will benefit from the enjoyment gained by either participating in or watching (in person or on telly or online)
Apart from from the first (and most of those are foreign workers - check it out!) the others are all, as yet, unknown and will not be known until and after the event.

I wouldn't be surprised if a few, if not all, of your 'will'(s) could turn out to be 'did not'(s).
The last of course probably will be true, for those who enjoy olympics. I do to but my gut will be sickened by the sight of Sepp Blatter and his cronies in the best seats, the best transport, the best hospitality etc etc, all for free but at our expense.

So would you have built the Channel Tunnel or not?

Some people here wouldn't have seen the original Wembley stadium built if they had had their way !

This is PH, what else do you expect? The grumpy-old-men count (regardless of age and/or gender wink) is far above average.

Concorde, Channel Tunnel, Olympics..... All very nice if you can afford to go on/ to them but none were viable commercial concerns until they were bailed out to get rid of the development/building costs. It would be easy to find more worthwhile ways to spend the money but it is awe inspiring to have seen Concorde take off.

I'm more concerned about the crap that the government doesn't spend our money on, like upgrading the vital road link between Nottingham and M1 J24, or the Catthorpe interchange where the M1/M6 and A14 meet in train wreck fashion. Even £6BN would have addressed these schemes and many more. Great value, my foot!
I don't use that road. Nor do I want to. Can I have my £600 back?
I'm sure there's similar examples near you. It's a simple case of priorities.

I hear the cabby's are now trying to muscle in on the Olympic ripoff by threatening to boycott the games if not allowed to charge 20% more during the games. Good news being, if boycott goes ahead, there should be no congestion to hamper the expected increase throughout the games. spin

My mother has been privvy to some of the details regarding the roads around the Olympics.
If you believe her, and I think she is being a bit if a drama queen about this, the cabbies won't be able to get anywhere near the place, nor will anyone else who isn't on an official bus or limo they should just be happy that there will be more people who can use their services.

I'll be avoiding london during that period, just don't fancy walking into someone's security/police state.
As a UK citizen I'm supposed to be able to access all public areas of London - I don't need reminding how much my rights are being infringed.

You won't like the fact then that the USA have been given sovereign rights in the protection of the president for the duration of the games. I suspect others have too.

It seems anyone - from the crooked IOC to the crooked politicians that visit are given priority over the common man.
Why do we vote for these people again? (I don't btw).

Well you should, because at least then you will have a basis to say they don't represent you.

I think your mother is right to be concerned as, with half the City's traffic lanes taken out for the duration of the games, there will certainly be chaos. If all the improvements to the tube network/stations is to be believed, why is it necessary for the dignitaries to be chauffeured by limousines?

I caught the end of someone on R4 this morning, saying that America will be sending their own anti-terrorist personnel along to police the games. I too will be keeping my distance until this debacle is well and truly over with.

They have been here for some time. I believe they have been liasing with our boys in blue and some in green since the buildings started going up.

I live over the road from the main site. It is entirely possible that I won't even be allowed to ride my bike to work because of being in one of the prioty lane zones. I am so pleased.

The icing on the cake being, we have to pay extra for it. rage

Seems just the right time to revive this fine memorial to the PH moaners, groaners and whingers.

So what have you all been up to while the rest of the nation has been enjoying the fine spectacle and numerous British successes?

biggrin

Looking at the debacle of empty seats and unavailable tickets I'd say 'I told you so'.
£500,000 a minute for what exactly?, shonky BBC coverage of a group of grown men running down a track jumping over hurdles.

Woo Pee Doo.

Indeed - and nice to see that the emphasis placed on sport in the private education sector is having on our medal haul.

Ozzie....Ozzie....are you all right?...you seem to be having a choking fit.

I remember visiting Millfield as part of the school Judo team, about 30 years ago. We had the crap beaten out of us. Proper sporty that lot are.

Woo Pee Doo.
I think that would be Whoopie Doo.

I think it's been a great sports event but still have concerns about the true legacy, and the fact that whatever benefits there may be, if at all, they won't extend outside of the Capital anyway.

It will be interesting to see attitudes in a week or two when we get back to reality. You know, a dire economic climate, unemployment, catastrophic deficit etc. It hasn't gone away, it just feels like it...........
