I'm amused by this thread.
Michael Jackson wasn't convicted of any crime against children nor was Jimmy Saville.
Yet we don't get legions of people leaping to his defence whenever he is mentioned.
Yet Jimmy was a saint!
I'd rather we remembered them both for the work they did, whether it be entertaining or charity work and leave the unproven accusations and rumours elsewhere.

RIP Jimmy Savile, he'll be missed by many, for his charity work and for those of us of a certain age, for his almost constant presence on TV and radio as we grew up.
Looks like I’m not the only one to think that Shakespeare’s “Friends Romans and Countrymen” will be applied to Saville’s personal life (I'm not convinced that the rumours are true, as in this day and age, there would have at the very least been an investigation)

Jimmy Saville did more in his life than some detractors on here will ever do. I recall my first memory of him on Top of the Pops in 1964 - he has also been a semi-pro cycle racer, and professional wrestler.
His charity work is beyond question. Just 'cos he never acted or looked the norm didn't mean he wasn't a perfect human being. He was nearer to it than many!
A tireless champion of good deeds and needs.
In the 80s this fabulous Ginetta G12 was well-known with driver Richard Dodkins supporting the Stoke Mandeville Hospital Appeal Fund - it had Saville's famed signature on the rear (Saville's smiley - before emoticons had even been heard of - inside his 'J', and Saville's 'S' turned into a $ sign and an 'l' into a £ sign. He was absolutely genuine.
He was a bloody legend and the assholes on here deriding him on are beyond contempt. Have some respect!

The press have tried for years to prove the rumours against Jimmy Saville. They've not managed to come up with anything better than calling him a bit odd because he looked after his old Mum!Michael Jackson wasn't convicted of any crime against children nor was Jimmy Saville.

Micheal Jackson on the other hand, paid $21Million for the Chandler family to quietly go away and not co-operate with the investigation into his alleged activities.
Jackson deserves no defence.

That's a real shame, he did a lot of charity work for the Royal Marines. I met him at RM Condor, seemed a good bloke he loved it when we took the mickey out of him by shouting out some of catchphrases.
Not your average type, but his heart was in the right place.
He was the first and one of a tiny group of civillian's who earnt a Green Beret.
RIP
The green beret thing is apparently not true. Not your average type, but his heart was in the right place.

RIP
Interesting Mail article about him a few years ago said that it's basically not possible to give civvies one.
I am astounded by this thread, here is a man who has raised millions by his own efforts and yet as soon as he is dead there are those who want to rubbish is legacy and memory.
Jimmy saville was not an ordinary bloke, he dragged himself up from being a miner through sporting endeavours, to entertainment. He brought pleasure to many and hope to thousands.
Yes he was odd by our standards but who are we to judge? Is looking after your mother a bad thing? Is not being married a problem?
As others have said if there was the slightest wiff of truth in any of the rumours he would not have got a gong, if the press had anything with proof they would have used it.
I for one will remember him fondly

Really? Oh then it must have been a figment of my imagination of who was wearing a green lid, shell suit and sunglasses at the parade that I was on.Interesting Mail article about him a few years ago said that it's basically not possible to give civvies one.
.
And the tv images that I remember of JS doing the thirty miler, carrying a specially weighted umbrella made by the armourers as a civvy was not allowed to carry an SLR.
He did the 30 miler and passed it, nobody expected him too. Because of this the corps awarded him an honoury Green Beret. He attended a lot of corps events and supported us on many occasions. I believe that he also passed the remaining commando tests. However a true Green Beret is only earnt by those attempt and pass the whole traing course, whether it is Royal Marine Commando training or the All Arms Commando Course.
But if the corps awards you an honoury Green Beret then it belives that you are good enough to wear one, and he did.
RIP JImmy, thanks for all of your 'good effort'.

It's not about rubbishing legacy it's about not fawning over someone just because they died. This isn't a 'oh he's a bit strange' this is a 'if you'd experienced his behavior for real you'd actually find him disgusting'Jimmy saville was not an ordinary bloke, he dragged himself up from being a miner through sporting endeavours, to entertainment. Good that your view is based on actually having met him rather than a presumption. Oh hang on...
