Some staggeringly distasteful (and potentially actionable) comments on this thread.

He was a character, an era passes.

In other news, thousands of small children over the UK can now relax wink.

Would it be too much to at least give him time to cool down?

He will be remembered partly as an eccentric but mostly as someone who raised fortunes for charity.

Here's hoping history will be kinder to him than some on here have been.

I'm guessing we'll find out whether the Have I Got News For You transcript was real or not soon....

It's not commonly known, but Jimmy had been working the past few years to be taken as a serious physicist. He'd studied extensively for his Phd. with a thesis due to be published next month on spacetime and general relativity. The title of the paper, "Now then, now then, now then"

I asked Jim to Fix It for Magnus Pike (a TV scientist of his day well known for the expansive and animated arm gestures he made when describing things) to be tied to a chair and asked to explain how sun spots occur.

Jim never fixed that for me. The git.
He fixed it for somebody though as I definitely remember seeing some kid trying to tie Magnus Pike to a chair. I asked Jim to fix it for me to be beamed to earth from the space ship from Blakes 7.

One of the public who was in the audience would have confirmed it by now if it was.

A local character who will be missed, used to see him about quite a bit, either running, driving with a cigar so big it touched the windscreen or just out and about the area. A curious fellow to many I guess but hopefully he'll be remembered for all the positive stuff he did, he seemed to have quite a penchant for helping others.

I had the pleasure of being seated at "his" table in Flying Pizza once, he wasn't in the restaurant but I still felt honoured smile

I guess his bench in Scarborough will need a new sign now frown

I've heard all the rumours.

True or not all I can say is that myself and a workmate spent a brilliant afternoon with him about 10 or so years ago.

An utter pro, right down to his obvous stock reply when I accused him of not fixing something for me when I was a nipper.

"I remember your letter. It was the one without the stamp on it."

We were walking along a road together. Cars beeping, people cheering him on. A true star.

We walked on and a car spluttered to a halt on the roadside, steam coming out of the grille. Jimmy leaned through the open window and said to the utterly gob smacked driver "Now then, Jim can fix many things but I think in this case you are better off calling the AA"

Hope the press are kind. Its an overused term these days, but Sir Jimmy, you were a legend. RIP.

As many have said let's remember the man and the worthy causes he's supported and the people that benefited from his charity work both seen and unseen by the press, not the stories or rumours about his private life.

R.I.P Sir James Wilson Vincent Saville.
