What worries me is that the UN might just be stupid enough to fall for all the rubbish that the Argentines are spouting...

We can demand they provide conclusive evidence to support their assertions. You can't just make allegations willy nilly. If it turns out we have been naughty it would at least allow us to find out from whom they obtained the information.

I've read the last 10 or so pages about who has the best weapons etc, and am wondering why this topic has so many posts... unless I'm seriously naive this is all willy waving isn't it? I mean unless I've missed something there is almost 0% of either side staring something, correct?

If not, I'm more than happy to be educated as to why I'm wrong smile

Hey up. They are messing around again

Two cruise ships turned away from Argentine cos they went to the Falklands.

Probably call it a misunderstanding. Do they need tourism?

PS, Features & Analysis on the right. Interesting coincidence...
They're trying to isolate the Falklanders to squeeze them out. Their own intellectuals think it is wrong though and against their own constitution to be acting in such a way towards the islands.

Not sure who'll fund that though, because we (the RAF) are absolutely stoney broke.
I'm sure plenty of people would pay to see the penguins if it's the right price,, can't it be developed into a cruise port & jumping off point for antartic cruises etc,, develop it's infrastructure & pay it's own way so as to be less reliant on the south americans.

Not completely true, assuming it has a Merlin embarked with torpedoes? Admittedly not much help if weather is too bad for Merlin to fly.

There may also be a British sub down there as well, though obviously the MOD would never comment on that.

The thing that worries me is how badly she's running the economy. The Economist will no longer use official figures for inflation in Argentina and she's trying to nationalise the operations of foreign companies, that sort of thing will put off a lot of investors leading them into a downward economic spiral, which is precisely what sparked the idea for the '82 invasion.

A Mirage, for example...?

The Typhoon was designed for maneuverability, and yet here it is having its arse handed to it by a 30 year old aircraft in a turning fight. If our pilots don't get suckered into a knife fight then fine, but BVR missiles can be jammed or malfunction and it's not as invincible as some are making out.
To be fair the typhoon was designed 30 years ago also it just took much longer to enter service.

The RGs are pushing quite hard for direct flights between BA and the islands. Whilst direct links are a good thing if their intentions are honourable it is strange that they are pushing for this yet banning cruise ships, etc.

If an RG civilian airliner from Argentina landed on a regular, scheduled basis at MPA for a number of months until it became part of the furniture, I wonder what we would do if one day the airliner turned out to be a C130 loaded with RG special forces?
That had been mooted on here by a few others, either its for that scenario, to earn some extra revenue or to get some stranglehold over the movement and therefore freedom of the islanders. Of lately the Argies have been doing a very good job of losing friends and alienating people after trying to isolate us and now picking on Repsol. This jingoistic nationalism is all very good for getting the public vote internally but they forget these days there are global stakeholders that will not react well to this st.

I see the IOC have now criticised the Argentinian advert for politicising the games. Perhaps this was the (misplaced) fear of the UK ad agency who airbrushed HMS Belfast off the London 2012 poster. Still any criticism of the Argies is good, show them up to be the petulant fools that they are.

The Americans were keen to get their feet on the ground there eh?! I reckon they'd still be there today if Thatcher had allowed that. I'm glad she stuck to her guns.

Let's hope the UK government isn't caught short like last time.
Don't think so = the base at and near Port Stanley is impressive!
It would still come down to intelligence though. The base at Mount Pleasant is impressive but there are only four Typhoons based there, of which only two are probably airworthy at any one time. If we had a reliable warning of a serious threat and the government acted on it by reinforcing the islands then the Argentines would have no chance, but lets not forget that we missed the signals in '82 and we haven't got such a decisive government now, they might be worried by the political impact of being seen to reinforce the islands.

Having said that I think the chances of Argentina trying it any time soon are pretty small.

The Chinese seem to be spreading their influence through commerce. Who proposed the Antarctic treaties? The Americans - who took the attitude if we can't have it nobody can have it or at least let's stop everyone else furthering their claims so we can catch up, all under the guise of environmental concern. Name me any environmental protection treaty that they are at the forefront of.............
