No I'm sure that they would throw a few bombs about rather than loose face. British public wouldn't accept the loss of the islands not when the red tops started to print pictures from 1982. Imagine a picture of RFA Sir Galahad splashed all over the front page of the Sun with a headline 'for what ed?'

I think with the current state of the RG navies we could drive them back by setting the penguins on em.

Followed on page two with an article written by Ed himself with a headline 'Why are you asking me? I'm irrelevant'.

Every political leader knows that 'foreign' wars are mostly vote losers, but 'defending our people' - even if a couple of thousand miles away is a huge vote winner.

All about perceived strength. Nothing shows weakness more than letting someone invade your territory...

As said, the red tops (and most of the 'proper' papers) would be having a field day in the event of a loss of territory. Especially one with identifiable 'Brits', and huge oil reserves.

Do nothing, lose the vote for a generation. Fight and win, and you've won for one.

I'd be rioting if any UK government turned over the Falklands.

Never!

Riots? Demonstrations for sure but riots aren't very British, anyway it wont happen as the defending forces would be enough to stop/slow an invasion long enough for it all to go very wrong for the aggressor.

So they're so insecure that they feel they have to drill this 'belief' into the general populace by placing rhetorical propaganda on buses? Oooooookkaaaayyy

Desperation indeed.

hehe

It will temporarily take the mind of the populace away from the state of the economy by encouraging a bit of nationalistic fervour, the tactic of all politicians when the cupboard is bare.

And afterwards?

Mayhem will ensue when the masses inevitably realise they have been had, not a nice prospect in S. American states if past history is anything to go by.

If it did come to it, and the Argies decided to come out to play, Any action taken by HM Government would have to be very swift and very robust. No pissing about. A very clear message would need to be sent, the consequences demonstrated in full.

The lack of an aircraft carrier and aircraft will scupper that plan slightly....
Unless Ark Royal is just been hidden away under a dust sheet along with a harrier squadron...

As pointed out, HMS Falkland Islands might do well in place of a ship on the water?

Given the current state of the Argentinian armed force, it will take more than a few years until they are capable of invading the falklands even if there were no defences. Long before that HMS "I'm Queen Liz and if you think you are taking one of my islands you can royally **** right off" will be ready. To be followed shortly after by "HMS I have been waiting to be King for too long, so I'm in no mood to take any **** from you lot"

You are aware that there is a major airbase on East Falkland, you know with 4x Typhoons, Tanker, AT and Helo support, let alone LLADS?

I think he was thinking about re-taking the islands, which would be a big ask without a carrier. You're right that we have lots of stuff on Falkland now, and an Argentine attempt would be desperate to say the least.

The Argentines don't need to destroy 4 x Typhoons, just incapacitate 4 x pilots. Advertise free beer in the local pub, wait until the pilots wander in, four double-taps, goodnight.

I am aware that the Falklands had significantly upgraded their military requirements.
but a small garrison will not ward off a mass invasion... Hence my post.

But with a force on the islands with air superiority, landing troops will become unattainable, you hope the military are in charge of this bit as well and not a politician.
