IIRC it's about a year from the next presidential election in Argie-land, and SHE is not allowed to stand for a third term (although she is trying to change that law).

So perhaps she will go 'st or bust' in trying to get a third term via a poorly judged military excursion...but her military may not oblige (they're not suicidal).

You are aware that there is a major airbase on East Falkland, you know with 4x Typhoons, Tanker, AT and Helo support, let alone LLADS?
I am aware that the Falklands had significantly upgraded their military requirements.
but a small garrison will not ward off a mass invasion... Hence my post.
A mass invasion that they do not have the capability to undertake.

Whatever state people seem to think our Armed forces are in, the Argentines are far worse off. We absolutley could still launch a task Force to retake the Falklands, but we won't need to.

This. Neither the Argie navy nor army has the capability to launch a massed and opposed invasion. To say nothing of the political will.

Given the state of their economy, corruption claims against her cabinet and lack of energy sustainability is it any surprise they're dragging this old crap again not long before an election.

Let them flap their gums, it's almost like a form of comic relief each time they pop out of their pit.

presumably we have the ability to keep half an eye on their ports, and if it looked like they were planning something, which I am sure would take a number of days, if not weeks, we could re-enforce the Typhoon force before they got anywhere near the coast of the Falklands?

A couple of kids with rocks could sink their fleet now.

Indeed. NATO has more than a whiff of US protection racket about it IMO. The US has quietly been our biggest enemy since circa WW2.

Does anyone else secretly want the Argentinians to invade? They have a very short memory, we went to war, they lost, they're in a worse state now militarily, why don't they just sod off? The Falklands were British before their toxic debt cesspit country even existed, they're like Mexicans but without the gardening skills or burritos.

I think the Argies are a lot more like us, than like their leaders.

In that they have a successful ruling elite who can, from time to time, get lippy and push the boundaries of what their office/country/military can do, in the secure knowledge that if it goes tits-up they can blame the military/former colonialists/the USA/the treasury or whatever.

The country of Argentina does have significant natural resources, a good climate, a government, a semblance of a banking system, and neighbours who currently tolerate them. So far so good. If they elect a nutter who goes to war then they will have a price to pay etc but the country is still there complete with potential.

The woman in charge is a seasoned political campaigner - so she has no moral compass and fewer ethics to restrain her. She can claim what she likes - certain parts of the population will be in favour of sabre rattling - but eventually the truth will come out. If she delivers economic growth and the prosperity reaches most of the electorate she's done her job, arguably. Upsetting a small foreign country 9000 miles away is probably of no consequence to the average Argie.

Just my two penny worth.

I can't think of a country that that statement does not apply to.

Argentina announced last month that it intends to buy 24 Saab Gripen fighters, and they're bloomin good planes. Thankfully the UK has blocked the sale, however Brazil has just ordered loads too so not sure if Argentina will try to circumvent our attempts to block Argentina by buying through a.n.other?

Are the Falklands members of NATO? I'm not sure (in this case) that the NATO rules apply?

The Argies are a great people and they have a beautiful country, rich with natural resources.

Their main misfortune was being colonised by Spanish as opposed to British. If they had been, they would now be rich and stable like Australia. Any anti British rhetoric is simply the result of a hopeless corrupt government trying to draw attention from decades of disasterous economic policies.

I love the fact that Victory, commissioned in 1778 is on the list.

Extended readiness. Presumably that means " semi mothballed" ready in a few weeks?

The Brazilian military is there as a defense against Argentina. Has been going on for ages. South America had its own Dreadnought race in the early 20th century. The US built 2 battleships for Argentina, the UK built 2 battleships for Brazil and also 2 battleships for Chile, although we took one over temprarily for WWI and one permanently as a conversion to an aircraft carrier. They tool up purely to get ahead of their neighbour.

They all mistrust each other down there. If oil rich Brazil are buying new expensive kit it'll force Argentina to do something they can't afford to do with dire consequences to their crumbling economy.
