A Russian carrier recently sought shelter off the coast of Scotland during the storms - but stayed in international waters.

So we sent a ship to take a look (a Nimrod would have been handy!).

HMS York duely puffed up all the way from Portsmouth - you couldn't make it up!
And what's wrong with that? She wasn't there to 'defend the country', she was on station to make a point that we were aware of them, and had responded by sending a 'gun boat'. Makes rather more of an impact than a plane circling overhead for an hour or two.

Meanwhile, underneath the Russian flotilla, there would be a sub lurking.

You are aware how long it takes to send a ship from Portsmouth to NE Scotland? It's not exactly an 'instant' response.

After five years of being commissioned in the RN, very aware ta.

My point was that it's a usual response to alien warships off your coast.

The reason for this is that no matter what the circumstances (war, peace or sabre-rattling) everyone at sea shares a common enemy - the large expanse of watery stuff that can sink you faster than any number of guns, missiles or bombs.

As such, sending a warship to meet other warships, that may be in dificulty, is both a show of strength AND a show of unity. It is, if you like, a robust way of saying 'how you doing?'

Why aren't the Channel Islands part of France seeing as they're closer to there than the UK mainland?

Look back at the Falklands war and something that keeps coming up is the claim that had they lost a carrier, it was game over. If you do beleive that to be true, then they were one lucky missle strike away from victory, and a very different Britain.
I see we have solved this problem by just not having any carriers to Exocet now. Out of interest, do they still have Exocet or a similar weapon that could take out a carrier ?

Personally I'd put money on our 4 Typhoons plus a Type 45 destroyer, an Astute class sub and a Vanguard class sub against their entire three armed forces of fifties and sixties vintage kit. . . . .
Apart from the fact that neither Astute nor the Type 45 are fully operational yet.

But the former Foreign Office minister Denis MacShane said the "hostile action" was aimed at London, not the Falklands, and blamed the coalition for weakening Britain's international standing.

The Labour MP said: "South American leaders know that Britain has fewer friends than ever before because of David Cameron's isolationist approach in Europe and the indifference to the Obama administration as most cabinet members are close to US neo-Cons.

Witless sabre rattling by a overly made-up drag queen lookalike. Stealing their oil? Even if Rockhopper pull all the stops out no oil will get to market before 2016. They are the ones that unilaterally tore up the existing agreement about oil exploration/production.

Didn't France cut off the supply of Exocet to Argentian? Would they do that today?

I doubt that a NATO member would actively supply a country in conflict with another NATO member.

The US supplies Greece and Turkey. They are always playing chicken with each other's F-16s.
