Blimey is this thread still going, good to see the only real contributor hasn't got bored though, well done. Perhaps we should get the mods to update the thread title to Viperpicts little Scotland, or The Last Next King of Scotland....

thinfourth2 said: Totally disagree. Unless this turns into an alcohol tax which somehow supplants the... er... alcohol tax I believe it is at least an attempt to deal with a very real problem. At least it acknowledges that a proportion of us are complete wastes of space who'll drink anything to escape our lives. I mean really, who is 50pp unit going to hit who doesn't have a drink problem? If anything, this is a more conservative idea in that it will hit the "poor" hardest. If by poor you mean the homeless who desire sweet oblivion.

If Google doesn't take you seriously, why should anyone else? Edited: Odd...you decided to delete that one? - did you misread the Bluffer's Guide to Gaelic, and it actually means "My nipples explode with delight", or something about your hovercraft?

The first one is my own attempt but my gaelic is not perfect (250 odd years of persecution of the language post-Culloden is my excuse). However, there is not really a 'correct' way to spell in gaelic as there are so many dialects. But I thought the second quote more appropriate for this time of evening and needed some help finding the word for 'hovercraft'! I had presumed that it might be 'hovercraft' but, no, there appears to be a gaelic word!

Let your language devolve into a thousand different incompatible dialects, and your sense of nationhood goes down the crapper. Which is why we're so keen on English orthography here on PH. Keeps the clans together, or at least keeps them communicating.

Quite the opposite I have every single faith in those that work in Scotland to turn the country into a world beater due to our resources and skills. However I don't see on single politician in the whole of the UK and especially scotland that is capable of making the voter unfriendly choices to turn us into a world beater. And the anything but the tories tossers who dominate scotland ensure we have a future entirely of the scottish labour party. Show me a right wing, small government, pro business, non nanny state party in Scotland and i'll happily vote for independence. Until then you can shove it up your little blue painted bum

Those pesky English ridding yourself of a pointless language. 1.2 percent of the Scottish population speak Gaelic, apparently. It seems that persecution is still ongoing, despite road signs being in both, and you being ale to learn whatever language you want since the day you were born. Those pesky English and their useful language of internationalness.

But that % is starting to increase now with the deserved promotion of the language in schools etc.

And all could quite happily communicate with each other, from the dialect they spoke on the northern tip of Lewis to that in Aberdeenshire. You might be mistaking Scotland with western Africa there?

How did you manage that, I've met Scots who can't communicate in English effectively

My point is that the dominant force in scottish politics your so called Tartan tories are a bunch of over regulating nanny knows best bunch of s who should just f k off out of my life. What, you mean they are 'government'? Yes i mean the SNP are a bunch of nanny know best s Apparently this will make the cheapest bottle of scotch about £14. It's very nice of the SNP to agree to give so much of their revenue from alcohol sales to England to help fund the deficit. I envisage huge booze hypermarkets opening up in Berwick and regular booze cruises down the A1 for Scots desperate to pay their alcohol duty to England instead of the SNP. . . . . Have you ever tasted whisky < £14/bottle? I'll stick to malts, thank-you very much. And decent (i.e., Scottish) gin. I don't drink alcohol, not even buckie. . . . .
