Anyway, as for the hosepipe ban, they can try if they want, but they won't ban me using a hosepipe when the industry loses 3,393,750 litres per day.

Yes, 3.4 million litres per day, or 1,238,718,750 litres per year!

I run a dehumidifier in the garage to try and keep the cars dry
Now that's PH right there.
hehe is it worth more PH points if I tell you that I nicked it from the bathroom and despite protests I won't give it back ?

This story seems to get so much credence as it revolves around the south. Last year going over the top of the M62 or across the Woodhead pass the reservoirs were very low, and here in Lincs it was dry. But since someone announced there was a drought we seem to have had loads of rain. The reservoirs around the M62 and Woodhead pass are now full to brimming, and again here is Lincs we are pretty sodden now.

One question though - does Snow not count against the rainfall - as last winter there was loads of snow here - but it was still regarded as a dry winter, just wandering... confused

What drought?
Is that water entering the water table and being distributed elsewhere? Didn't think so.
Up here in Aberdeenshire a drought is when we can see dry patches on the roads.

I think a foot of snow is about the same as an inch of rain.

Ah yes, maybe as bad as last years drought - six days wasn't it?

Another BBQ Summer on the way?

Followed by yet another 'How Useless Are The Met Office?' thread shortly afterwards...
Drought doesn't mean hot sunny summers.

Our last four Summers can be summed up using the following words:-

'Washout'
'Miserable'
'Deluge'
'Flooded'
'Downpour'
'Disappointing'

And would you describe the South-East's water infrastructure as fit for purpose?

Okay if we are in a drought condition then why has about 3 acres of puddle stayed there for about a year and hasn't evaporated away or drained through the soil?

Clay underneath? You didn't answer the question. The fact that it is still there is contributing to drought, not lessening it!

Seems to take us back to what I said

Too much water way up north and no plans to take it away to where it would do far more good. I am sure I remember reading somewhere in here that a gentleman of Scottish persuasion said it would ecologically damage the land to send that water doon south.

Better to let it lay across valued arable land set "aside" to evaporate...if the sun comes out

NO.

There is undoubtedly currently, and has been for some time a drought in the UK.

We all know that the weather constantly changes and that extrapolating long term changes is a mugs game.

But it would seem that there is a drought, currently, and has been a drought for some time.

The wastage of water by the water authorities is a disgrace. Even without their incompetence we would be in some difficulty. As it is, the two together should ensure yet more hand wringing in government circles.

As a society we simply do not pay enough heed to fundamentals like infrastructure requirements as the population grows steadily.

Doubtless we will see the painful results this summer.

Drought? I could do with some of that to be honest. I'm sure our summer last year was one weekend, then that was it, it packed it's bags and fked off sharpish.
