With the price of Diesel now and cant see many advantages over a NA petrol or forced induction petrol nowadays.
"Proper" petrol NA and t/charged sports cars require super unleaded, which is only a couple of pence per liter cheaper than diesel, plus they get around half the mpg of a sporty diesel.

So the fuel costs per bhp are still wildly different.

Many 'proper' sports cars will run fine on 95ron and 'sporty' diesel is an oxymoron. Obviously a highly stressed jap sports saloon is going to need high octane fuel as well as the obligatory bi-weekly servicing. biggrin

I imagine the sort of person who talks about 'sporty' diesels drives an S line Audi 4 banger or a rep spec BMW for BIK reasons. Either that or they're monumentally dim/dull and think they're saving money.

edit to add: diesel makes a lot of sense on the mainland where it's some 20 to 30% cheaper than petrol but very little for a private low mileage user in the UK.

Just filled up in Dubai - less than 30p/litre

Sorry, couldn't resist wink
This is what p!sses me off about this country and why i have given up on petrol powered fun. Talk about get shafted and so many people are happy to keep paying these stupid fuel prices.

The less i use the better.
Then you're probably on the wrong forum. No-one likes the price of fuel but many of us aren't going to let it stop us enjoying our cars.
Though there was hundreds of pages of moaning when we had a Labour Chancellor.
Still bitter and twisted about that election result comrade?
I thought Labour were utterly useless.

The PH (relative) silence on fuel prices is a mystery though.

The price of diesel has hit a new high, at 143.05 pence a litre, figures have suggested
The previous high was 143.04p, in May 2011, at the height of the "Arab spring
So, assuming you've got the numbers right, it's one hundredth of a penny more expensive than almost a year ago. For all intents and purposes, that's the same (unless you consider one hundredth of a penny an extortionate hike biggrin)

(yes, I know it's peak and not average figures winkbiggrin)

fuel duty rises and increasing tension in the middle east may push up prices further

to be honest though i've forgotten that fuel was expensive, kind of used to it now. I think £1.50 would be a psychological barrier, but much like £1 was it will soon be £1.59.9 per litre and we will be used to it

whether its £74 or £82 to fill up your car it's no real difference to most however when it goes over £100 to fill a golf then that will be classed as expensive I reckon!

This cant be a surprise to anyone more diesel cars are sold than petrol demand for diesel is higher which means more profit if the demand for LPG was higher then that would go up too its a monopoly then can charge what they like.

I can see fuel prices biting and if they continue to go up at current rates then people will stop making discretionary journeys and tourist destinations of the sort you might have gone to on a Sunday or a bank holiday will see fewer visitors.

Can't see what all the fuss is about, cheaper fuel would be good but with cars now much more economical on fuel then even 15 years ago it seems to balance out the added cost of a tankful. Take increased wages and inflation into consideration and it not so bad.

So write to your MP and complain about the tax on it!!

That's the ONLY way the price will go down, if we all refuse to vote for any MP who doesn't seek to reduce tax on fuel.

But a 23mpg car many years ago is NOT a 55mpg car now. You've possibly gone from an interesting/sporty petrol to a dull diesel.

Compare like with like and cars are certainly better on fuel, however (leaving aside over inflated "official" figures) the rise in cost has outridden the improvement in mpg.

I would hazard a guess that cars have improved mpg by 10, 15% max over the last 10/15 years. How much has fuel risen in that time?

Much like the fuel protests when Labour were in charge.

I can't help but think they may have been politically motivated.

How can fuel cost double in just 6 years?

If the cost of crude oil/petrol rises, why should they still keep the same fuel duty percentage? Rip off.

I've done it a few times. It's Labours fault, or the strength of the pound against the dollar or the high price of crude. They never admit to the amount of tax that they sting us for. If they did, the schools and hospitals card would come out again, that or he environment card. tts.
