I'll await closure of this thread but the news is reporting protesters in Afghanistan protesting at the burning of the Koran by US troops or US authorities.

I wonder would The Gideons react in the same way if we burned some Bibles????

or would PHers riot if we say, burned a few Cortina MkIV Haynes' manuals???

What really gets me though is that at pres. it is being reported that 4 people have died in this protest.

This is their OWN protest....it beggars belief. ok, vent your spleen and tell everyone you are unhappy (it is now a moderately "free-er" country) but look after your own ffs...

Their not even "rioting" AGAINST anyone...per se.

It's gone violent and at least one person has been killed.
Pathetic really.

People need to get a grip.. it's just a book.
It's said to be inadvertant.. and they have apologised.
Why all the hate on this planet?

The chap who sells all of the American flags to be burned every week must be laughing.

I was quite shocked at this story, I couldn't believe the stupidity from the US. How could anybody think burning the Koran would be a good idea? I mean really, who thought up the idea? Idiot.

The disproportion of the reaction always amuses me.

I think if these people lived over here they would be the 'traffic wombles' who close 18 miles of motorway because someone dropped a banana skin out of a car window.

Yes, I am being flippant, it's Wednesday and I'm tired.

Wasn't it found in incinerator leftovers? Could easily have been missed/overlooked/in a pocket.

As much as troops screw things up, I'd be surprised if this was overtly intentional.

I take larger issue with the now widespread public reaction/opinion of “well, you know what’ll happen”. At what point did common sense leave the building? So much so that the expected reaction to a *slight* is to go batty, burn things and kill people?

Its now SO expected that we blame people who do it more than the rioters?! What. The. fk.

The problem is not that it was a stupid idea - it was - it is a shame how much of a stupid idea it is given the probable reaction.

Yes, it was stupid but killing people in its name is far, far, far, far stupider.

There is more to the whole story so says some reporting. Some reports say the inmates were writing in their copies of the Koran messages to one another as they passed them around. That was intercepted. Let's look at this now: Islam law prohibits writing in the Koran, if one is written in, it is to be burned as purification. So, why is doing so causing such an uproar. Why did the so-called followers of Islam break the law and write in the Koran in the first place? This is one report I heard this morning, it might all be BS and it was simply inadvertant. Who knows?
Your point about dying in your own protest is a good point.

thankyou.

i didn't know writing in the Koran was forbidden but it makes sense that you shouldn't deface a holy text.

the reation for is disproportionate and it transpires there were riot police or troops there as well, which in all likelihod enflamed the situation.

it does amaze me the level of outrage and fanaticism caused by what in this country would be seen as a minor infraction....

Exactly, it was stupid as we knew what the reaction would be. These Muslim idiots seem to throw a hissy fit over anything they can as they feel discriminated.

I remember the poppy burning fiasco, a demonstration aimed at insulting and pissing proud Britons off. I looked at what they were doing and really didn't care as I had very little respect for the demonstrators from that moment onwards. They should have been treated as they deserved and ignored.

I tend to think we should treat these angry Muslims as they deserve. Like an angry child if you will, its a ball ache when they throw a bh fit so its best not to antagnoise them.

Burning one Koran is a good start but if we really want to put an end to this fiasco we’ll need a much bigger fire. Also don’t stop at just one religious text, there should be no half measures in dealing with religion.

Here's an idea - the Americans give them a pile of bibles to burn as compensation ?
