Perhaps the veiled ones are Jedi and used the old Jedi mind trick on airport security while they smuggled bomb making equipment passed the distraction.

What a thoroughly ludicrous situation.
I try and not post on race threads in here because there are so many potential hazards but the situation is way out of control in this country.
On Saturday I cycled through a small town called Hyde a few miles to the East of Manchester and witnessed the aftermath of an EDL demonstration and it was scary stuff. Apart from Old Trafford on a derby day I've never seen a police presence like it; A helicopter, mounted officers, dozens and dozens of riot vans. This wasn't Oldham or Tottenham or any of the usual suspect places, it's a sleepy little market town.
The politicians and media need to get a grip on this and get back to providing the perception of a level playing field. The idiot security staff at the airport need sacking, or sending on a course or something.

Fortunately, it's not quite right if you read the linked article. Article said: "Department for Transport rules do not prevent people covering their faces at UK airports for religious reasons.
However, all passengers must show their faces to UK Borders officials when they pass through passport control. Muslim women who wear hijabs can request that their identity is checked by a female immigration officer and they can also ask that they be taken to a private room before they remove their head wear."

TheHeretic said: Was there a riot? Not as far as I am aware. A couple of young white lads got a very, very severe kicking by a group of local Pakistani lads a couple of weeks ago and tensions have been high there since. The police have treated it as a race attack, the press have continually called it a 'race attack' which is the sort of thing that I personally think adds to the trouble. The EDL arranged to have some speeches and I think there was a counter demo by another group, possibly the UAF - I'm not sure. The police had a seriously massive presence, it was a hell of a sight and I think they managed to head off any trouble. Local radio later reported it as "Thousands of people took to the street to march against the EDL in Hyde". That wasn't quite the way I saw it though, there were EDL members (identifiable by their banners and clothing) everywhere. It looked to me like the majority were in support.

Reading through, and, as I did, contributing to, this thread over the weekend reads like about half of PHers must never have flown - they don't know the difference between the security staff and the border control people.

As soon as I saw the title of the thread I knew it would be Gatwick. Word of warning they will do this especially if you have delayed them in any way in the strip search that now passes for security. Its all about bonuses and ramming cattle (sorry "customers") through as quickly as possible. Better to relabel you as abusive/racist than have you effecting their performance figures.
PS When they say "We are just doing our job Sir" Dont say "Thats what the guards at Auschwitz said"

Sick of Oldham being referred to as a s thole. I grew up there. My family grew up there. It was an industrious town full of hardworking people. Then they moved to cotton production to the subcontinent. Then moved the useless bits of the subcontinent to Oldham. If it's a s thole now its not down to the indiginous population as those that could have moved away.

You said that, not me. It is quiet though compared with somewhere like Rochdale or Oldham, I bet you wouldn't have expected to see the police all over the place like a rash - I'm not exaggerating, it was a massive presence.

As are Hyde, Hattersley, most of Ashton, parts of Audenshaw, Denton, Dukinfield, Stalybridge and Droylsden... There are lots of factors, they're old mill towns aften with a lot of sub-standard terraced housing stock (replaced in some areas with really crappy social housing), industrial decline and, yes, in some areas ghettoisation is an issue.

They have a serious job to do and they take it seriously I'm 100% with security and immigration staff . They have a hard enough job without smart-alecs trying to impress their mates with their "wit". I don't often disagree with Eric - but the guy had a perfectly valid point. He asked a perfectly valid question. It wasn't racist in any way at all. The staff should have spent their time doing their 'serious job' instead of wasting their time with this bloke. Sadly, most security staff and their managers are not very bright and cannot really discern between valid questions and racism. 1. It's not really a valid question though. It would be like asking why you can't keep your baseball cap on whilst a Sikh still wears his turban. It was a dumb thing to say. 2. The article actually says he didn't ask it as a question - he made a light-hearted remark. Maybe if he'd asked it as a question it might have been received better - he might actually have got a proper answer. But he decided to be a witty knob instead. 3. In making a witty knob remark about someone else's religious attire, he potentially caused offence. I say potentially because I think the whole idea of holding him is ridiculous. I will say this however. It may just be a gut instint, and I could be wrong. But I can't help feeling a comment like that would not have come from someone who had nothing at all against muslims.

So we're now saying religion > equality? That's just an awesome place to be. Furthermore there is no religious obligation to wear that attire. The very fact that people are afforded different 'rights' or protections thereof depending on their flavour of belief is a f king nonsense in this day and age.
