'Hammered' Eric Joyce spared jail after attacking MPs

MP Eric Joyce was spared jail today for beating up four politicians while drunk and telling police "You can't touch me, I'm an MP".

He swore at officers after going berserk and headbutting Tory MP Stuart Andrew and councillor Ben Maney.

The suspended Labour party member was warned he could face prison for the attacks.

But chief magistrate Howard Riddle fined him £3,000 and ordered him to pay £1,400 to victims after he entered early guilty pleas.

Joyce was also given a 12-month community order - banning him from entering pubs and licensed premises for three months - and imposed with a curfew order from Friday to Sunday.

Joyce also attacked Tory councillor Luke Mackenzie before turning on Labour whip Phillip Wilson.

The politician - who accepted he was "hammered" during the brawl - expressed his "shame and embarrassment" through his barrister, Jeremy Dein QC, at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

"He is unreservedly apologetic for what occurred on the night in question," Mr Dein said.

The 51-year-old accepted that the fact that he was drinking was not an excuse "for the dreadful scenario that unfolded".

Joyce launched into a frenzied attack after shouting that the Strangers' Bar "was full of f****** Tories".

Having attacked two MPs and two councillors he then wrote in a police officer's notebook: "We are a Tory nation, that cannot be forever... good cops unite."

Witnesses to the brawl said "he was very angry, drunk, angrier than anyone", prosecutor Zoe Martin told the court.

One onlooker said his "eyes looked like nobody was home" while another said his "eyes looked dead".

Violence flared after the £65,000-a-year MP for Falkirk started singing "very loudly", drinkers said.
Sounds like a complete tt.

You really could put a donkey up for the Labour Party in parts of Scotland and get it elected. rolleyes

I think he should have gone to jail - sentencing seems rather "random" in application (son of a friend of mine did 10 months for an argument/ fisticuffs in a night club !!! - first offence)

But instead of stepping down, he's going to milk it for all he can for the next few years in his £65,000-a-year job.

I wouldn't be happy of I was from Falkirk.

You would if you were a die hard Labour voter. Your MP has headbutted an 'Evil Tory' and you're not sure what a 'whip' is but it dosen't sound very nice. 5 MORE YEARS!

Apologies if this is a repost, but have a look at the wikipedia page on him...

Let me see:
- Banned from driving twice, once for 12+ points, another for failing to give a breathtest. So drink driving as far as I'm concerned.
- Separated from his second wife
- Has had an alleged affair with a 17yr old girl at high school
- "Joyce was the top-claiming Member of the House of Commons for the 2005–06 Parliamentary Session, claiming £174,811 in expenses, of which 62% was for staff and office costs. After the 2005–06 Parliamentary Session, he made a public pledge to cut his expenses. Subsequently, during the 2006–07 Parliamentary Session, he moved down to 11th on the list of MPs' expenses and allowances. However, he once again rose to the top of the expenses list for the 2007–08 Parliamentary Session with £187,334.

Joyce was the first MP to claim more than £1 million cumulatively in expenses. In October 2007 Joyce claimed £180 for three oil paintings. When asked why he had used taxpayers' funds in such a way he replied "because they look nice." In May 2009, tabloids reported Joyce was seeking advice from HM Revenue and Customs regarding £40,000 in unpaid capital gains tax on the sale of his London home, which he had designated as his second home under the Second Homes Allowance scheme. The house had been sold for a £133,000 profit. When asked what he would do were he asked to repay the money, Joyce stated he would "suck it and see".

But it's okay, he's got a degree in Religious studies!

Remember the alleged affair was before the separation.

He may also have possibly been fighting in Strangers as well previously.

Only the bars will be licensed unfortunately.

On Sky News this lunch time they were saying tht someone from within the Labour Party had said he was definitely going to be booted out of the party. He'll still be able to be an MP though wont he despite that?

The gall of the man is extraordinary, he makes out like he owes it to Falkirk to carry on as they elected him. What he really means is he's unemployable and is looking after number one. Falkirk didn't elect him because they thought he had a good head but on him I don't think.

I'm actually shocked that he gets to decide whether he can remain as an MP. It really should be that any sort of conviction and you're gone.
