Which is why stamp duty (transaction tax) is a stupid way of taxing accumulated wealth. The answer of course is a land value tax, but this will never happen because half of the land in the UK isn't even registered with the land registry, it just passes seamlessly from one generation of blue-bloods to the next.

Presumably you'll be giving all your assets to charity instead of your children then?Trommel said:

But this is separate to issue of land owned by various royals, which dates back hundreds of years and isn't even registered or taxed in any way

Probably only everyone who pays at 20% will be better off as he will probably reduce the 40% threshold again - pulling more people into that band.
really think they would do that?so people in the middle will be hammered again.
As an addendum to my more serious list earlier, may I also suggest Gorgeous recommends the following to the House:
- introduction of a 99p coin (my all time favourite MRLP policy)
- moving the UK government (parliament, the ministries, and the civil service) to Birmingham. This is full of win, with almost no downsides. I note that 40% of the G20 has split government and commercial centres, so it's clearly workable. And it would give High Speed 2 a bit more relevance.

3. MASSIVE rise in fag duty
Thus encouraging more people to buy smuggled cigarettes, reducing the total tax revenue and increading the amount of money lost to the black economy.Genius.
And tax revenue lost to smuggling has actually gone down over the past 10 years despite duty going up.

At what point will the taxation on things like fags, booze and fuel get to the point where people stop using them - where will the revenue come from then?
The taxes on these would have to be increased massively to even make a dent in the number of people using them.anonymous said:

I reckon for quite a few [ mainly overseas? ] buyers of multi-milliom pound properties.. the additional stamp duty isnt something to be concerned about [even if the Govt get tough with anti-avoidance].A 7%+ transaction cost to acquire safe-haven-trophy assets in London .... big deal.
They will usually want immediate gratification .. self build is just too much hassle.
