So opened up a letter today from DVLA.
Inside was a copy of my vehicle registration (V5) document.... but it was red?

Reading the notes from DVLA

Why have we sent you a new V5C?
"We are replacing all existing blue V5Cs. The new certificate is being introduced following the theft of a number of blank blue V5C's...."

HOW much is this going to cost?!?
Guess who the cost is going to be passed on to !?

I can't see it costing much, instead of their supply providing blue templates they will supply red. Then as and when cars are re-registered the DVLA will issue a new colour v5.

Presumably the DVLA have the serial numbers for all of the stolen V5s so whenever one is sent in it is flagged up. The loser in this transaction will be the poor buyer who though thinks they have a new car only to find they have bought a stolen one with a fake V5.

Or am I over simplifying things?!

In an attempt to add some balance to the self selecting criticism that is often levelled at bureaucracy the DVLA were the most efficient organisation or authority involved in our recent home move. New documents arrived the same day we did.

I was rather surprised and pleased.

The Council tried their best but there was an element of "computer says no" - but even that was sorted with one phone call.

Phone and broadband took two "lost" days over two weeks to sort themselves. And then the billing (from three seperate companies) was buggered for another month or so. Nearly ten weeks in and we still haven't actually changed gas or electricity utility providers.

Er, not quite.

They are issuing a red V5 for all vehicles, not just when they change hands. I have had replacements for my car and my motorhome.

Exactly. How many millions of vehicles are there on the road?
At least they are getting this done before the cost of posting stuff doubles hehe

Exactly +1

I've had new forms for two of my three cars. No other reason than that the DVLA couldn't keep blanks secure.

At least they didnt ignore the issue, and have acted.

How would you of liked it if it turned out your next car purchase turned out to be a clone on one of the stolen certs? Not a happy bunny I suspect.

Ooooh err..

I think you ire would perhaps be better directed to the theiving scum who pilfered the blue ones and caused this subsequenct chain of events.

Have they fully explained why there was ' an issue' in the first place or is it yet another fk up to be whitewashed?

+1 however,
Taken from the 'What Car' article:

'The blue forms will be replaced with a red one only when a car is sold, details are changed, it is lost, stolen or destroyed.'

I don't think What Car are right.

DVLA is replacing all existing blue V5Cs and will issue a new red V5C for all vehicles that have not already had one by November 2012.

This explanation - from the link - seems to be lacking something:

Q Why change the V5C?
A The re-designed V5C now makes it clear that it is not proof of ownership and will provide details of where you can get advice on how to avoid becoming the victim of vehicle crime.

Unless 'avoid becoming the victim of vehicle crime' means removing the chances of buying or using a stolen blue V5C.

None of my cars falls into any of those categories and why would you issue a new V5C when a car is destroyed?

As I have asked, is there a full explanation of why this fk up happened? And why has if taken 6 years to get to grips with it?

FFS DVLA!
