An honourable man would be finding a way to pay those monies himself, at the very least appealing for donations to pay back those who put up guarantees in the expectation that he would honour the bail conditions. Instead he seems to be just hiding in the embassy and leaving them to pick up the pieces.

Ok, so holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in fear for his life he's meant to do what exactly? Come out and tell his supporters that the search for truth will continue, but in the mean time please donate generously to give Joanna Lumley her £100k back?

If they were rich enough and concerned enough to pay his bail bond then that's a chance they take. It was hardly "lend us a tenner till Friday" was it?

What, less than he values his life? Which it seems reasonable to assume is the end game of being shipped off to Sweden on trumped up rape charges shortly after releasing some awkward secrets about the most powerful government in the world.
There have been 55 pages of debate on how legitimate any concerns he may have for his life are. Needless to say I'm more in the camp that thinks he's a weasel using his actions on wiki leaks to try and dodge a rape charge (I imagine the publicity seeking knob jockey has used wiki leaks for all sorts of personal gain). I guess you're in the other camp wink

Still, I should think his friends are probably OK with losing the money. If not, they've only two people to blame.

...wouldn't be up on rape charges or skip bail, using any old guff to try and sidle out of it. I mean, hiding in the Ecuadorian embassy. Man up Assange.

^^^^ This.

His 3 main priorities in life are obviously

1/ avoiding a rape charge
2/ his public image
3/ his self image

he comes across to me as a self-indulgent narcissist

Very perceptive! smile

Actually I don't think I'm in any camp.

I've no doubt that he's a self aggrandizing weasle with his own agenda. But it seems an unlikely coincidence that these girls suddenly remembered he raped them just when he started releasing the more sensitive information.

He basically made public what those in power are doing with our money, in our name. I understand the argument against, and I don't expect anyone in or previously in the armed forces to really support this view, but I fundamentally think we have a right to know, and the people putting lives at risk were the ones who decided to invade Iraq, not the ones who published some leaked files on the internet.

I dont have an issue with finding out what the Govt is up to with our money, or in finding out mis-deeds of Govt...

..it's just the method that the holier than thou Julian-the-Messiah has used and that he has released stuff that may put lives at risk.

he also has a face I just wouldn't tire of hitting for some reason ....right up there with Ed Balls smile

I think the whole situation is hilarious, especially all the righteous indignation from the PH talking heads.

Keep it up Julian, it keeps this place interesting wink

At the risk of being tiresome, if as and when this goes before a court in Sweden, it will be up to the court to decide the legitimacy or otherwise of these women's claims.

Or are you suggesting that the entire Swedish legal system is dancing to the tune played by the USA?

If it's the latter, then it isn't just a tinfoil hat you need.

The entire Swedish legal system doesn't hinge on one extradition request and it's quite conceivable that such a request could be made in response to the right pressure on the right people.

Of course you are right, it makes perfect sense for them to trump up some rape charges in order to get him rather than just asking the Swedes to arrest him and extradite him. I mean, why do something as simple as that when you can do something really complex and weird instead?

Oh dear, it appears he's getting poorly.

It seems he didn't really think through his idea to hide in one of the smallest Embassies in this country.

I wonder what his next move might might be? Medical evacuation under Diplomatic Terms to Ecuador to take advantage of their cutting-edge Health program for lung and breathing problems?

I've heard the air in Sweden is particularly good.

As he's living on Ecuadorian land, they can bring in medical expertise and pay for it. It seems their Govt has 'warned' the UK of his declining health - bloody cheek.

Assange is not living on Ecuadorian land. An Embassy does not form part of the sovereign territory of the nation that it represents. The Ecuadorian Embassy is part of the UK. By convention, however, agencies of the host nation do not enter an Embassy without permission.

As soon as Assange leaves the Embassy, he is liable to be arrested. He does not have any Diplomatic immunity, and an attempt to class him as a Diplomat would be ineffective as a sham.
