Ecuador can have their cake and eat it. They can temporarily prevent Assange from causing mischief while he stays at their lesuire, thus currying favour whilst also being honour bound to give him sanctuary thus currying favour.
Smart play.

Indeed. A good analysis, IMO.

Assange has the opportunity to prove he is not a liar by facing charges in a Swedish court. That he is avoiding the court does not help to demonstrate his honesty.
The guy is a weapons grade prick IMHO, but in his position I'd be avoiding Sweden too. I live in Scandinavia, sex crimes are rarely pursued with any vigour at all and the chance of conviction is tiny. The penalties are tiny too, even if convicted. There's more to the Swedes chasing this than meets the eye...they would do well to put their own house in order as their rape rates are massive, but rarely punished.
This, exactly this!
I've just been through a case with someone I am close to. I could not believe the attitude of the police, the lawyers and particularly the judges over here. The victim had to run the investigation, the lawyers were just plain lazy and disinterested and the judges ignored any of the submissions and found her part culpable - whilst bleeding from a smashed jaw and being forcibly raped, it was part her fault! FFS. Scandy justice is a complete joke, just check the Andrea Vollum case that had people out in the streets as she named her attackers on FB and the judges who let the attackers off...

There is a real problem with sexual violence against women in Scandinavia.

But, Sweden are pursuing Assange who is accused of rape for taking off a condom whilst having consensual sex? Pull the other one...

Wikileaks has become like a cult, everything he says is uncritically accepted as the whole truth without a shred of evidence and quite often strong evidence it is bullst dismissed with a conspiracy theory levels of devotion. The way his critics are hounded online is completely consistent with the scientology cult approach. His father was player in a cult called the Family and undoubtedly learnt most of tricks from and his mother was one of the victims as was his first
girlfiend victim.

Yup, you definitely sound like someone who's taking an even-handed approach to this!

(Not sure that any of the people embarassed by Wikileak exposure have yet tried to claim the leaked documents aren't genuine. Most of them say its stolen data (stolen = genuine) but then say that we should be shooting/droning the messenger.)

Hope your friend is coping.

Sadly this is nothing new, at least not here in Sweden, the justice system is a joke, especially when it comes to sexual assault and rape. Police have been covering up mass sexual assaults at festivals for years, because of fear of "feeding the dark forces".
She didn't fight back hard enough, she was drunk, she was scantily clad, she didn't say no, she was only being shy, she didn't bleed that much, these are some of the reasonings used by courts around the country for non guilty verdicts of rapists.

As I've said before, the JA circus is not about an alleged rape.

Thanks. She's moving on with life, that's the way. I'd love to understand the mindset here, but it's a bit of a mystery to me. A young, very capable single mother I know here reckons that many girls are raped more than once before they leave school - often at parties and gatherings. A number of local guys were found with GHB at a party here last month and just sent on their way by the cops.

Word is they were pressured by Kerry during the FARC talks.

Assange was never proven a liar in any respect. He is an advocate for truth.
The only thing he is a advocate for is his own ego. He has a deep and unpleasant personality disorder and is a very dangerous guy, as far as I can see.

Agreed, except it's backfired on him.
Send the perv back to Sweden to face trial.

jshell displaying the Donald Trump attitude towards respecting women, thus:

If a dumb broad says please don't cough your yoghurt inside my body, it's perfectly okay to ignore the stupid bh's instruction, just tell her to brace herself and be grateful.

How terribly twenty first century of you.

It's exactly what he is saying. He's saying a woman has no right to dictate what enters her body, and for a man who disobeys her should not be subject to criminal investigation.

No the way I read it.

He's saying that it doesn't stack up that the Swedes would have no interest in even worse, easier to prosecute, cases yet pursue this one. Not that they shouldn't be pursuing all of them.

Assange might be a bit of a gobste as a person, but he certainly needs credit for exposing a lot of stuff that politicians would like to keep from public scrutiny.
