The Daily Mail asks "Why were the Queen and Prince Philip left to shiver in the rain for 4 hours?"

Quite simple. Because they have a BACKBONE.

Absolutely! Sharing with the crowds of supporters their discomfort - something I doubt a president elect would do.

The other thing that struck me about the concert side of things is that thanks to two decades of massive growth in Glastonbury spin offs all over the UK and in London the ent systems nowadays in the UK are pretty phenominal.

There must be a lot of experience and expertise in the UK in running shows like this now. And we are certainly spoilt for choice when it comes to venues, even in London there must be over 20 similar, world class outdoor venues.

On top of that, there simply aren't that many countries who could call on such an immense depth of world class artists stretching over 50 years. It was nice to see the colonials and ex colonials but they weren't needed to fill the bill.

Bit of a bizarre post.

20 venues in London? Where?

And do you think that having colonials involved just might be appropriate because she is still their queen too?

It's only bizarre if you didn't read it properly. wink

I never said anything at all about act's appropriateness. I've no idea where you plucked that from.

The comment was that there is such a rich vein of artistic talent in the UK that you could fill such a bill domestically. Can't even begin to see how anyone could misinterpret that to find an insult.

The venues? Kenwood House, Regents Park, Nottingham Hill, Hyde Park, Greenwich, Blackheath, Primrose Hill, Trafalgar Square, Clapham Common, Victoria Park, Hampton Court, Crystal Palace, the Square Mile, Docklands, Billingsgate, Ealing Common, Kew Gardens, Piccadilly, Gunnersbury Park.

Those are just the outdoor music events I recall over the last decade. As I'm not what I would call a 'gig' person I can only assume I have only mentioned a fraction.

Just watched the end of the concert with the fireworks show, literally sent a tingle up my spine. What a show, we really are fantastic when it comes to this sort of thing. I agree with Charlie, it makes you proud to be British!

Definitely put some pressure on Danny Boyle.

It was superb. I hope the Olympics can match.

Do the BBC think their average audience is aged 10 or something? Their whole coverage has seemed to me to be very amateur. Sky had gravitas (Holmes excepted), ITV was factual, but the BBC was like "Billy & Johnny presents".

I wonder if he was watching it and going, 'Awwwww, fk! Right lads - back to the drawing board'.

Being discussed on Radio 4 in a few minutes. The BBC are well aware they cocked this one up and are back pedalling like mad now.

I didn't get to see any of the BBC coverage - what was the overall problem?

They decided to run it as a glorified edition of The One Show. As a result it missed the target regarding the appropriate atmosphere and mood to strike and the presenters seemed out of their depth. The River Regatta was the worst of it. There was far too much reliance on celebs and their vacuous opinions and far too little knowledgeable comment on what we were supposed to be paying attention to.

Interesting comments by Gillian Reynolds - echoing most of what has been said here.

I have to assume that you are joking?

It certainly made me shiver - with embarrassment. I couldn't believe it when one of the 'presenters' trotted out the old 'Rolls, reg HRH1parked on yellows' gag! Come back Morecambe and Wise, all is forgiven.

If that's the best we can manage, no wonder the Country's in the st.

Just goes to show you can fool most of the people most of the time.

Have you considered that you may just be miserable and out of touch?

I wasn't that impressed with the whole concert idea so, I didn't watch it - apart from the very end.

On the whole, the events that were put on were appropriate and well executed. My one criticsm is the standard of the TV coverage. None of the channels did a great job but the BBC were very, very poor - which was sad as they normally do this type of thing very well.

Wasn't a good idea to have a second verse of GSTQ at the end of the concert was it, lot's of humming going on at that point. Highlight of the concert, apart from Grace Jones obviously smile

I can't remember any wisecracks during the fireworks show myself. Read my post again and then cheer up a bit smile
