This is exactly what I was thinking - pretty much each of these boats was there for a very good reason and had a story, the best I remember from the highlights there seemed to just be a couple of comments on the plant pots on a narrow boat, and the impact of the wind on the rowers! As this was essentially a snapshot of our recent seafaring adn boating history, it was pathetic.

A dreadful own goal. I was there myself but recorded the coverage, on returning home was amazed to find out little more than the short piece in the paper I read on the way there and a couple of boats I looked up on Wikipedia because I was interested as they went by. Did nobody in the BBC do any research into the craft? Seemed to me a chance to just promote a few presenter's careers.
My guess is that they had drawn up prep notes on all the significant boats that were supposed to be in attendance but never made it due to the weather. As such they left themselves a little blind when they had to fill in the gaps.

Cos it's their barge, basically. Sponsored by the company.

Rowers on it include a bunch of disabled ex-servicepeople.

Apparently when the London Philharmonic went past the MI6 building they played the James Bond theme tune hehe
yes
hehe

I really, really regret how little coverage there was of the music barges. 10 bloody orchestras, 7 newly-commissioned works and we get 5 minutes of the Phil playing crowdpleasers.

Over 3,500 thousand formal complaints submitted to the BBC so far - according to the BBC yesterday.

They have been known to get all saintly when they get even 35 complaints on something...will be interesting how they tackle 3500! To have the audacity of putting out a world wide BBC coverage that mimicks X factor crap...and stray away from the class that is usually the USP of the BBC all the while trying to justify the licence fee. You better up your game for the olympics or the BBC is in trouble!

There were and it was great seeing them shuffle off looking dejected when their voices were drowned out by families suddenly bursting into Land of Hope & Glory. One of your typical rent-a-crustie types who was holding a furled-up banner was approached by a couple of lads in Royal Marines tee-shirts and buggered off sharpish when they had a quiet word with him. I'm assuming they informed him where the banner would be inserted if he tried to wave it around smile

Among the republicans was gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, who said in a speech that he had ‘nothing against the Queen’ but that he hated the institution of monarchy.

He said: ‘This Queen has not been a disaster. But you only have to look back to the 1930s and King Edward VIII, a man who sympathised with the Nazi regime.’

Mr Tatchell branded the monarchy ‘racist’ because there would never be a black or Asian on the throne while the Windsor family held it, and he accused the Queen of not representing all British people as she had never visited a gay or lesbian organisation.
A load of nonsense from (deeply Imperialist!) Tatchell, as usual.

With one grain of - apparent - sense in it.

Never be a black or asian person on the throne - nonsense! Heir to throne, being a free person in a free country, has kids with whoever they choose to hook up with, living and working in big metropolitan communities there's no reason to assume that will only ever be white people, result being I'd actually be genuinely surprised if we didn't have some mixed-race royals within the next generation.

If it's true that no lesbian/gay/LGBT charity or organisation has ever been visited that's actually a bit weird - bear in mind, we're not talking about any particular individual organisation, obviously there will be thousands of those, but the entire sector with all the different charities and areas of activity? If he's right (and truly equal emphasis should be placed on visits from younger royals too, not just the Queen) then that does strike me as a bit odd - I doubt anyone could point to another whole charitable sector which has been completely ignored by the royal family, if that's what Tatchell is alleging.

Claire Balding (sorry Eric) has admitted that the BBC coverage could have been better.

Gloriana was substantially funded by Lord Sterling who is the founder and current chairman of Motability.

Yup, and beneath all the gold leaf twirly bits, amazing artwork and other bespoke finery fit for a Queen is a rather cunningly designed wheelchair lift to get down the couple of steps into the posh cabin.

You are not wrong, I was indeed referring to Camilla Parker Bowles. The other woman, precisely.

To be fair to the Queen and Charles I think there'd have been more complaints if he'd taken Diana along on the boat.

There were a lot of significant boats there, to miss the Dunkirk little ships completely was unforgiveable. Frankly I could have done a better job on some of the boats than they did.

There was a hal heated attempt at the end, presumably because of complaints flooding in, but by that time we were down to the Dutch barges and the large boned lady was warming up her vocal chords by then, although this is no way casting aspersions on the singers at the end who belted out a tune while utterly pissed wet through to their undercrackers.

The list of vessels with sufficient notes on many of them is available here not much preparation needed frankly.

Best thing the Beeb could do would be to issue a commemorative DVD with commentary by David Dimbleby and sell it at a very low price as compensation for cocking up on the day.
