Calling someone "Fatty" could become a hatecrime.

When I was at school, bullying fat kids was fine and there were few of them.
Now it is not ok to bully fat kids and we have a lot of them.
QED imho.
"which was to be demonstrated"?Now it is not ok to bully fat kids and we have a lot of them.
QED imho.
What are you saying, that the reason we have more fat kids is that they don't get bullied enough?

I believe the situation is that it is not considered OK to bully anyone.
Broadly, I'd agree, having given and received my fair share through school, I'd say it's best discouraged, but when the pendulum swings too far the meritoracy ceases to function. When kid's football match scores cannot be reported on if the goal difference is too great, when we 'gift' qualifications to all and sundry, WTF is the point?Similarly, if someone's obese, they do actually need to know this, whether they or their parents like it. A bit of peer pressure can be a good thing.

I agree entirely, but I don't see that kind of all-must-have-prizes nonsense as being related to the tolerance of bullying. If some kids don't like competitive sports, fine, find them some other form of exercise they do like rather than leaving them as cannon fodder to stoke the egos of the ones who do, but if they do choose to compete, some must lose.Digga said:

I don't know, but I would imagine fat kids are probably pretty acutely aware of the fact.otolith said:

Agree. However what I'm not so convinced of is if they are aware it is within their power to do something about it.
I'll be the first to admit, there are absolutely people with genuine disorders/genetic issues. But they are firmly in the minority, and I feel (though may be wrong) there's a hell of a lot of people out there telling themselves they are in this subset when they are nothing of the sort.
"I've got a gland problem!"
Bet the chippy is still on speed-dial though eh?

Quite possibly part of the problem, although where children are concerned the power is in large part in the hands of the parents. However what I'm not so convinced of is if they are aware it is within their power to do something about it.
I'm reminded of that enormous teenager who was in the news recently, the one who previously lost some weight at a fat camp but was welcomed home with fish and chips because her mother couldn't be arsed to sort out some healthy food.

You certainly didn't get many 'big boned' people in Belsen...

Don't forget the motivational power of a bit of social stigma.
Don't forget the demotivational power of loss of self esteem, depression and hopelessness.Unfortunately, the problem with fat people isn't physics, it's psychology.

Sporting interest and ability came very late for me, to the extent that I never once represented my school in anything, despite (occasionally) playing rugby for the town. I cannot say that my early sporting experience was entirely negative - I had to accept I was (at the time) fairly puny and very st at football and get on with the rest of my life. Defeat teaches as many if not more lessons than victory, enculcates a more realistic ego and teaches admiration for kids who perhaps had no other means to excel.Gassing Station | News, Politics & Economics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
