Unemployed people were forced at gunpoint by an evil baby eating business person to spend the entire night camped outside in cardboard boxes because their bus was 2 hours early

I think it was Prescott who was into overdrive, not the BBC.

That was covered quite extensively this morning - with some withering criticism by Gillian Reynolds.

I was astonished at how such a minor matter could exercise the BBC and an ex-Government minister at public expense for so long on a national current affairs programme. Surely they all have too much time on their hands. To paraphrase the Monty Python sketch in the restaurant, "Oh, er by the way - got a bit of a dirty fork, could you ... er.. get me another one?"

Astonishing, wasn't it? No mention of the fact that many, many people would have been all over the opportunity to get the best seats in the house in exchange for a small amount of "work" plus an hour or so waiting around to get started. Prescott's main stance was that this could be repeated at the Olympics, despite being told by Davies and the other guest that Olympic staff were being paid at the rate agreed by LOCOG.

Indeed, I was listening over my cornflakes...

My impression was the 'BBC' are still in denial and pretty much refused to accept that they got it even partially wrong..

I dont totally agree with Gillian Reynolds, but really, surely the BBC must be able to see that their 'one show style' was inappropriate.

It would be nice if just once, someone put their hand up and said 'sorry, we got it wrong'.

Instead we get some excuses about how they wanted to try a different style.

To me, 'one show style' means mindless drivel on a par with 'loose woman'.

What summed it up for me, was their choice of 'clip' which featured someone interviewing a 'Paloma Someone or other', who only wanted to talk about her new album..

And still they couldnt see why it was inappropriate.

I'd be interested in reading Gillian Reynolds' thoughts on it - missed her on R4 this morning.

Not up on iPlayer yet.

This really belongs in the BBC Jubillee thread - to be honest.

The BBC reporting of a story shouldn't really be linked to its own failings over the broadcast though.
And saying "bus arrives early" implies this was some punters going on a shopping trip to Westfield, how dare they complain.

In actual fact these volunteers were put in a difficult position. Without somewhere as a base (hotel room etc) its very difficult not to mention demoralising and cold to be left in a city at night for 2 hours. Especially faced with the prospect of spending all day stood outside.

I'm not going as far as saying "heads should roll" for this, but something should have been done at e time. Allowing them to wait on the bus would have been the simple convenient answer, surely?

My moron friends were all posting this on Facebook and saying how it was such a disgrace. I've tried to point out that the people involved were volunteers and that this happens at lots of events (like the Olympics) but I doubt they will understand. Quite sad really.

Am I missing something here. A group of people get dropped off for work in London 2 hours early by mistake. They have 2 hours to kill so they decide to get some sleep but they can't sleep because they can't put up their tents on concrete. Now if there had been one or two of them I could understand they might be a bit nervous and upset at being left in a strange city in the middle of the night but presumably there were quite a few of them (a bus load?) so the only real issue seems to be that they couldn't get 2 hours sleep and were a bit cold. What an absolute fuss over nothing.

So if having to wait for 2 hours is beyond human endurance it might explain why we have so many unemployed folk

I thought the point was that they were not volunteers but people on jobseekers being made to do it unpaid or they had their benefit cut?
