Could be lots of reasons. The police found one gun on premises but for some reason this could not have been the one he threatened the officers with. Or rather, some evidence was adduced whereby enough doubt was raised for the prosecution to back away.

The chap had 19 hours to dispose of whatever he liked. The police might well have found the gun then stopped the enthusiastic search. What with 100 armed officers at the scene, a search team is just added expense. Once they found what they were looking for they probably would have come under pressure from the scene commander to pack up and book off. The original officers would probably not have been at the scene so they would not have been able to say that the gun was not the one that they were threatened with until later.

Everything is costed. A search team is expensive, although by no means a luxury.

If the intent of the offender was to convince the officers that what he held was a gun then the offence is complete. However, if the officers threatened have said that the BB gun was not the one they were confronted with then they must have got a good long look at the Cillit Bang.

The excuse this chap came up with does not have to be in any way reasonable as the case was dropped.

He'll come again, those who make up such stories always do, and next time the search team will pull the wallpaper off the walls just in case.

If he actually did produce a gun of course.
