Plus being America the sentence is the sentence you do the entire term without parole.... So this chap will die in jail for his crimes ruining so many people's lives.
That said killing someone gets 30years... Rape 5 years armed robbery 15 years GBH 8 years. To steal (a lot ) of money he gets 150 years. Now I struggle to square the circle those crimes which harm the victims in a physical way vs losing all your cash isn't right. The balance of the sentence should be much harsher for physical harm crime to a victim and less for say this sort of theft.
One thing though he is guilty without doubt why not give him the death penalty as he is costing the state a huge cost no need for it

To put it into perspective, stealing someone's life savings will have a very detrimental effect (both physical and mental) on an individual. Just watch any of those cowboy-builder programmes to see how terrible it can be. Multiply that over the number of victims and the length of punishment begins to make more sense. I was chatting to a retired policeman who dealt with this sort of crime, and he sort of convinced me that this white-collar crime deserved hefty punishments - though previously i felt the same way as you did.

No doubt. But worse than being murdered..?

Ari said: No doubt. But worse than being murdered..? Well i suppose the comparison would be if he murdered the same number of people, and one imagines that would be a pretty hefty punishment. Also my point was aimed at people who think "ah, it's only money .. no one got hurt".

Stanford's briefs had asked for a three to four year sentence Perhaps the judge will oblige them if they would care to step into the dock.

Ari said: No doubt. But worse than being murdered..? One fraud = less offensive than one murder. But unless you say 100 murders are no more offensive than one murder then a "scale" comes into play. This bloke scammed thousands of people so lets say he gets a one month sentence for each crime. It's starting to sound fair already. None of the UK nonsense where a lad is up for sentencing the first time he gets caught nicking and then asks for 20 other offences to be taken into account, increasing the overall sentence by little or nothing.

Good. Thieving b d. These massive sentences always make me think of a prison cell with a dusty skeleton on the bed surrounded with cobwebs.
