RIP

What a fantastic man, I wonder how many people are around today that would do such things?
The quote that got me was:

After meeting de Gaulle to ask his permission to join British forces (“Do it,” came the reply. “Even allied to the Devil, it’s for La France.” Nice one.

The war threw up loads of heroes, although not many to the level of this chap. A chap who went on board a booby-trapped submarine to get at the Enigma machine lived just down the road from me. He died a couple of years ago. A drunk we had in the cells on a regular basis had gone all through the North Africa campaign, up through Italy and then was put on the invasion of France (pour La France, de Gaulle). He had the MC and bar. He was a bona fide hero.

Look up Leonard Cheshire VC. His squadron of precision bombers could not see the target so he flew his Mustang I think over the heavily defended location for the bomb aimers to lock onto him.

I suppose you don't know what you would do untill you are tested. Mind you, I half suspect the answer.

A remarkable man and a remarkable life. It does puts your own poor existence in perspective though, when compared to life lived as such.

I he did it first in heavies, then a Mossie & finally a Mustang like you say.

Then after the war he started that chain of care homes for ex-service personnel.
