It's not rocket science.

It's all science!

"more money was spent in just one year bailing out our banks than has been spent on science since Jesus was alive"

"Since Jesus was alive"....

to be honest I've never taken to this bloke at all, bit too smarmy for my liking and to be honest he needs to change his appearance to match his age [unless it was all part of the bbc master plan??] but SORRY, whilst I have nothing against god botheres personally, any mention or reference to their deity in a professional sense just leaves me cold.....which brings us nicely onto his MMGW stance..... of rolleyes "the science is proven"...

I'm an atheist and I think that Jesus probably existed about 2,000 years ago.

Does science pay corporation tax?
Science invents stuff that can be made into products and sold by companies that will pay corporation tax.

The example of graphene is on the iplayer link.

Don't companies have nice expensive R&D departments coming up with the science type stuff?

We waste £12b a year on aid, why not simply invest that in Education and research . . . . . .we could even allocate part of it to solving the problems, of the countries to whom we currently gift Merc S classes and private jets!

Investment banks that were bailed out to pay money all back as of end of this year.

How much money wasted on scientific crap like finding out cola/pepsi has 0.0001% alcohol and so might cause addiction is paid back?

And that it's happening already, funded and controlled by people who have a far better record of making successful investments than governments. So the last thing they need is the government wading in and squandering precious financial and intellectual resources on their effort to make solar powered wind turbines out of renewable weetabix.

Really there's too much of this on Pistonheads at the moment. What do you mean by spending on science? Will you be buying everyone a chemistry kit?

The long term solution to our economic woes is the same as it's been since we have had a functioning economy to be woeful about. Private property, the rule of law, reasonable and predictable regulations and low taxes.

Science, like art, industry and nearly anything else you care to mention does best when the government provides this framework and stays well clear of the rest of it.

Of course the private sector understand how to invest in and bring products to markets.

'spending on science' could mean tax breaks or cheap loans for companies already developing new technology.

It is a shame there is only one MP with a science background. Maybe we need to stop voting for lawyers and financiers to be our MPs, then wasting money on wind turbines would cease.

Maybe lawyers and financiers wouldn't get such a big say if the government didn't spend so much time making laws and spending money?

Hasn't R&D recently been moved from one side of the tax break to the other ? It used to be tax deductable and now isn't IIRC.

Science - seeks to prove things

There is no proof whatsoever Jesus existed, yet his supposed existence is used as a fact by a man speaking in support of science.

I'm confused
I think that question, isn't whether on not he existed, but, if he really did exist, who was his father? smile

Comparing the banks loans that have been repayed to government spending on projects is insanity.

It is the equivalent to comparing a chocolate tart with a pillow, they both cost money but with no link at all.

We spent more on the armed forces too, a lot more. The welfare bill is the biggest hitter.
