I suspect there is a generational gap polarising the opinions of neutral observers on this issue.
I am thirty, so a similar age to both players and know full well that it is unacceptable to speak about someone's race in this way.
My parents think it is a storm in a teacup.
My mother cannot understand why my half Nigerian girlfriend gets offended by being called "half caste" for instance.
Anything but a guilty verdict will put back race relations by years imho.

Perhaps your mum is just a racist? Haha maybe she is :-) She thinks racism is wrong etc but just thinks that everyone should be thicker skinned and not be bothered by what other people think. An attitude that only someone who has never experienced racism towards them personally can take, I think.

Tell her to shut her fat hormonal mouth and shave her moustache, see how thick skinned she is about that. (Apologies, I don't suggest your mother has a moustache, I think you understand the point)

Exactly. She's there more to get noticed by the media than for the actual trial. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if one of the newspapers had paid her to be there, knowing the dubious underhand tactics they employ to create an "interesting angle" to a story...

Anything but a guilty verdict will put back race relations by years imho. Even if that means finding an innocent man guilty? While the film supposedly shows Terry saying what ever he said, his defence is that he was saying, "I never called you XXXXXXX" If that's true then - as much as I hate John Terry - he can't be found guilty.

I think Doreen Lawrence is involved with various anti racism organisations, so she was probably there in that capacity.

TwigtheWonderkid said: You may be right, but I don't think you can find someone guilty based on the look on their face! That's just supposition.
When that girl was murdered in Bristol a couple of years back, the landlord was hung out to dry because "he looked the type." Turns out it was nothing to do with him. Even by PH standards that's spurious. Looking weird and subsequently being branded a murderer in the press is no way comparable to calling someone 'A black ' with a snarl on your face and people reaching the conclusion that you racially abused the recipient. Nothing will come of this but not because Terry didn't racially abuse him.

Actually more importantly what is considered "right"... Our son, five years old and he talks about his friends day in day out, he happens to have two with the same name one of whom is Caucasian and one of whom is Asian, they are called amongst the kids Brown Freddy and White Freddy, the teachers, parents and kids have zero problem with this.... Some people genuinely need to get the f**k over themselves and stop getting offended by crap that does not matter! Frankly if a group of five year olds get this then those that don't need to take a long hard look at themselves!

The five year olds aren't making a value judgment in their use of the words white and brown as describers. Inherent in racist insults is the assumption that the target is innately inferior. They're different things.

And the assumption that everyone who makes a statement that uses a skin tone descriptor is doing so as a value judgement simply based on the arbitrary factor of age is inherently and equally if not more wrong, IMO.
