I was lucky enough to go to the dress rehearsal of the opening ceremony on Monday night. The vibe I picked up was that people actually felt quite reassured by having army personnel around. I felt much more comfortable having my bag searched by a soldier than someone from G4S. There was a moment I saw when a group of young army lads were walking through the Olympic Park and everyone just parted and made way for them and then applauded them as they came past.

A man from G4S just came to my house - to read my gas/electric meter.
World domination - one step at a time.

Probe launched after G4S guard calls solider 'baby-killer'. Evening Standard said: Yet more pressure has been heaped on the London 2012 Olympics’ embattled security contractor G4S after one of their staff was accused of spitting and hurling verbal abuse at a serviceman drafted in to cover the gaps at the Games.
The security guard is alleged to have called the soldier a “baby-killer”, in an apparent reference to his service in Afghanistan after the member of 35 Engineers asked to search him. The incident is thought to have happened at Lords cricket ground on Saturday, which was hosting the archery event. Full Article

World domination - one step at a time. I had them round a couple months ago to change the battery in my gas meter, I had to do it for him as the meter is above my door, he couldn't reach and didnt have a ladder

(because that would cost G4S far too much)

Well, now the G4S fiasco is becoming yesterdays chip paper, G4S are back on track advertising for investigators. The G4S advert says the civilian investigators to be based in Nuneaton, Rugby and Leamington will investigate crime, gather evidence, seize and view evidential material, take statements from victims and witnesses, undertake house-to-house inquiries, prepare files for the Crown Prosecution Services, attend court hearings and give evidence, and identify and trace offenders. Not privatisation at all is it G4S also proudly state "The important thing is that G4S can supply staff when needed. That's what they do." What, like the Olympics?? Still I suppose 8 turning up out of 150 wasn't bad. (And some of those were arrested for theft from the venue and fighting within 48hrs) Another shining example of privatisation is the need to provide interpreters. A very similar thing to G4S having Police work outsourced to them has already happened in the legal field. It has happened in the court interpreting profession when a company called Applied Language Solutions was given a contract worth £300m by the Ministry of Justice for interpreting across the court system. They are also used by Police in Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Lancashire, Merseyside, Cumbria and North Wales. It has been a complete and utter fiasco. People sent to court by this company have failed to turn up, they have failed to interpret correctly, people without CRB checks have been used and an instance even took place of someone sending her husband to interpret in a crown court trial because she was busy doing something else Having personal experience of trying to use these people, it is indeed a fiasco. But still, the Government is happy and the company is happy. All good then.
