It's hubris, like anything 'Great Britain' has been involved in recently.

I live and work in central London and I can't even walk across the road on my way home because of the 'Zil' lanes.
Do you mean the ones which come into force at 0600 Tomorrow?

And how exactly does one of these lanes prevent you crossing the road? They aren't fenced off.

The Marylebone road that takes me into Regents park where I live has already been fenced off on most crossings....and has been for a week or so..

Using mine, then expecting to pay some criminal ticket scam to attend - no chance.

Hope it falls flat on it's face so badly it stops the IOC from ever doing it again.
How much of your money was it?

Perhaps the Egyptian team should appear naked.

The Guardian said:
Egyptian athletes given 'fake Nike kit' for Olympics.

An Egyptian synchronised swimmer has claimed she was forced to spend £200 of her own money on new training kit for London 2012 after Egypt's Olympic Committee gave its 117-strong team "fake" tracksuits.

Yomna Khallaf claimed on Twitter that the gear supplied was obviously not authentic, and athletes have had to pay to replace it.

She wrote: "The bags for example have big nike logo in the front and the zippers are addidas [sic]. It's so frustrating that we had to pay extra 2000 [Egyptian] pounds to have other proper stuff to wear so that we can look okay not even good... We'd rather wear plain white or black shirts than this stty stuff!"

Khallaf claimed that, after questioning the standard of the kit, she was told by team officials to accept it or "have nothing at all". An EOC spokesman said the allegation would be investigated.

A Nike spokesman said: "Nike was recently made aware that the EOC chose a vendor for its athletes' training and village wear who is alleged to have supplied counterfeit footwear and apparel bearing the Nike trademarks.

"Nike is highly concerned that if these allegations are true, the athletes will have received products that do not meet Nike's quality standards. Nike's authorised distributor in Egypt has sent two official communications to the EOC on this issue and no response has been received."

well the events cost billions so he must have stumped up a fair old bit. okay, Globs...didnt realise you'd personally paid for this event so you probably have a valid grumble.

and i am absolutely sure that if it rains like a bd - which ruins the event - then the whole world will suddenly take notice of all the corporate sponsorship and rise up in revolt - not to mention making someone walk to a crossing point to get over a road - makes a lot of sense to me.

I didn't realise that one of our own PHers had paid for London 2012, well done that man. As someone who's looking forward to the Olympics I say cheers Globs, I raise a glass to you

Ahem!
On the 5 Dec 2006 – Mayor Ken Livingstone said the Olympics would cost Londoners 38-pence a week - the same as the price of a walnut whip.

Congratulations on your restraint, sir. I'd have put it more strongly myself.

I also believe the original budget to have (at least) quadrupled since that statement, making his original estimate nearer £1.50p/week. Or around £750/year. For the last 7 years. Comes to around £5250 per Londoner. So ten-and-a-half-grand between my wife and I. A bargain, given what we are getting out of it, I'm sure ...

Oli.

I agree. Good man, thanks.

I saw the torch this morning on my way to work. I was delayed 10 minutes on my walk, but worth it for the feel good factor through London, and seeing all the tourists happily spending their money in our economy.

Can't wait to see the lavish opening ceremory that Globs has bought us.

That's not so funny given the figures in the post above!

From 2003;

Telegraph said:
Council tax payers in London would have to pay an average £240 over a 12-year period to fund the Olympics, it was confirmed yesterday.

Ken Livingstone, the Mayor, has agreed that Londoners should contribute to the costs because they will enjoy the benefits. He put the cost at 38p a week, based on the assumption that council tax payers on the average band D pay an extra £20 a year.

Mr Livingstone said it would be a "huge bonus for London" because for every pound a household contributed there would be £3 of investment from the lottery in return.

He said the figures were estimates for the "worst case scenario" and added: "I can guarantee there will be no addition beyond the 38p a week and if we do very well we will come in much nearer to half that.

This week I've noticed the marines playing with Rigid Inflatable Boats (high speed donughts etc.) in the Thames, Lynx helicopers checking out the Shard, and Police powerboats going at full speed up and down the river. All good fun and who can blame them. I'm sure the Olympics are safe from Al Queda's navy.

On the other hand I haven't seen a single security check on anyone entering the Jubilee line. Given our recent history the underground trains seem to be the most obvious target for a terrorist attack, yet plenty of passengers are carrying backpacks and large bags into the trains with no checks whatsoever.

The only defence for Tube commuters is to take the fortnight off work.

I don't have any tickets (though it wasn't for want of trying) so can't be sure about what it might say on them, but I would have thought that the regs recently brought to our attention about branded clothing etc constitute some sort of breach of contract, on the basis that you can't go imposing retrospective conditions on the ticket buyer after purchase.

If I was in the T-shirt/trainer business, I'd be setting up commando shops all round the Olympic Park selling Pepsi shirts, Nike trainers etc for those ticketholders who want to make a statement and test the system. If there's enough of 'em I can't see the turnstile folk turning them away.

Old friend of mine who bagged a hatful of tickets by ignoring the UK website and going through other national sites is so angry about this branding thing that he's considering buying 'illegal' clothing, just to make a point - and he's never worn a T-shirt in his life.

According to our local news tonight, this whole story is bks (wasn't quite the word they used).
They actually said "wear what you wan't" just don't come as an obvious plant for one of the competitor brands. You won't get stopped for wearing ordinary branded clothes.
