So nice of you to decide these things for the rest of the World, saves us the bother.

I think he mean the blatant whoring it off as an advertising platform is the most repulsive ways, Coke + McD's as the offical sponsors, no ball games in the Olympic park.. etc etc.

Its not what it is about is it really.

Plus it will always be sunny in greece.

Isn't a forum about opinion?

I think it is.

Norfolkit - as others have said, I think you may be struggling with the concepts underlying a discussion forum. We can't simply answer '330d - mapped' to every one of life's questions. Although I accept that the answer to many of the remaining ones will be MX-5, obviously.

Joe90 - that's exactly what I meant. It always surprises me when athletes are pleases the Olympics are in the own country. I'd be gutted at missing out on a trip somewhere else smile

EDIT - got Joe90 and Norfolkit the wrong way round. Oops.

This is what I wrote almost 2 years ago:

"Agree. I also think that Greece should hold all the Olympics. Each country chips in for new venues as required, and they use the same venues every time. It might actually become proftable then, and any profit can be split between the Olympic countries to promote their sports."

I think that given how the economy has gone, there might be a shortage of countries willing to host these events.

I went to Athens regularly for about 18 months a few months ago. Yes much of the infrastructure is still there - roads, stadia etc. A friend there said that a fair number of the venues have fallen into disuse. Really hope that doesn't happen here.
The bits that aren't scheduled to be torn down will still be in the sthole that is Stratford. So don't bank on London following the lead of others with respect to "legacy".

It would be a great idea if the Olympics made money.

It's like making the poorest kid in the class hold everyone's birthday parties!
The Olympics make plenty of money for someone - you don't spunk 9bn-12bn quid on something and not have some people get very wealthy from it. Even if it's just the IOC, Visa, McDs, Adidas, building contractors, Lord Coe, etc.

Not struggling at all, just don't like someone's opinion being presented as an unchallengable fact

They have infrastructure, but it's in no fit state to host anything without a lot of money being thrown at it.

It is a farce
What about this issue about who is going to light the flame (Thompson or Redgrave)
Personally I'd let Bob Diamond light the f**ker and be done with.

I don't think they did host it in 96.

I remember reading a while ago about us using Barcelona as an example of how to regenerate an area and make the most of it all.

I went there a few years ago and had a walk around the Olympic site and its like a bloody ghost town, the main stadium is crumbling down and paths all overgrown around it. The only thing that still looked in use was the pool and that building was in dire need for a lick of paint. Turned out to be a waste of an afternoon.
The same has happened to the Algarve stadium from the Euro football championships.

Portugal have no use for a 35k-ish seater stadium on the Algarve, so everything is just getting overgrown and crumbling. It's a shame, as it was a really impressive facility when new.

I saw that. I live in the area, and the temptation to go out on the eve of the race, armed with a can of spray paint, to write the words 'Blair is a c**t' on the road is almost overwhelming.

You've said it so now you must do it. Those are the rules (that I've arbitrarily just invented to satisfy my own requirements) and you must obey.

Anyway, I thought it was de-rigeur for 'proper' cycle race routes to sport graffiti?

I agree 100%, so present your opinions as that, not as statements of fact.
"In my opinion this Olympics things is a farce" is fine that's your opinion, don't agree but that's fine.
"Clearly this Olympics things is a farce" is not fine, it's not clear to me and it's not my opinion, it's yours (his/hers technically), it was stated as though everyone agreed, I happen not to.

£50m+ spunked on a temporary shooting facility at Woolwich instead of a new facility at Bisley for half that; legacy shmegacy.

So only the Greeks would ever get home advantage? So no other countries get the benefits of hosting the games? So only ever greek youth get to get involved? So everyone from everywhere always has to compete in the Greek climate? Hmm sounds fair.

I'd vote for it if it means we get to host the World Cup every time.

Get over yourself. It's your failing that you can't infer that a particular statement is someone's opinion.
