Perhaps someone here knows - is the Olympic Torch being run all the way or does it get the occasional lift by car? Looking at the timings for when it arrives here in Sussex, it seems to cover quite long distances very quickly!

Goes by road in between some of the runs.

Thanks for that - seemed too quick to me!

Looking at timings locally they must use more than one, and start the next leg as they finish the previous one.

They're using about 8000. Each one goes (an average of) 300 yards then the flame gets passed on. It is a continuous thing though with the flame being passed on continuously/passed back to the minibus. No cheating and having it that far apart.
A total of around 95million laser cut holes in all the torches though.

64million surely? (8000x8000 since each hole represents a runner?)

Thats what I got told by the people who made them. I think that there are several being carried by the coppers near by, plus the test ones and some to tour the country/related venues etc.
