Maybe they'll have a better night in Dublin-I don't think London is really the right place for rock concerts.
I think you've hit the nail on the head.

More and more the UK, especially England, is apparently becoming a population that needs the reassurance and comfort of mind numbing petty regulation. Very sad.
This is a good opportunity for some of O.O.'s Strawman stuff, so-

Do you think it is sad that in this country they enforce regulations which prevent people driving along certain streets in whichever direction they choose? Perhaps it's sad that restaurants have to concentrate on hygeine instead of flavour? I'm sure you feel it's sad that in this country people aren't allowed to ppark in bus lanes if they are only going to be there for a few minutes?

How about 24 hour track days with straight through exhausts?

Absolute codswallop. Just buy the guy a watch. Then he can turn up on time & finish on time. He cannot deflect the problem on H&S/police/regulations. The problem is 'his' mismanagement. Surely he gets paid enough to provide entertainment, so he should give them what they pay for (including actually being on time).

Jimboka, just for argument's sake, assume you had gone to see a band you love and they started dot on 7.30 as advertised. Would you be annoyed if they then continued after the published 10.30 finish or would you be happy/excited?

Good Job Ken Dodd wasn't playing there then.

He is supposed to finish at around 11, but is usually still telling gags till 12:30.....

I won't presume to answer on his behalf, but I would guess that if he was near the front, and the concert was twenty miles from his home, and he knew he could get the last bus/train if he got out of there by, say, eleven, then I think he would be very glad indeed if the concert ended on time.

Speaking for myself: it entirely depends on whether I can catch my train/bus/camel home on time, or whether the fact that myself plus sixty-odd thousand other people are now making alternative transport arrangements pisses on my chips or not.

To be clear: I don't really care when pub gigs end. But stadium events involving tens of thousands of people are a completely different barrel of foreskins.

I think they were stopped, rather than choosing to stop.
So a contract/license was agreed and signed yet they still wanted to ignore that and carry on?
Yes. Most fans (or customers, if you prefer) like it when a band (or business) gives them more product for the same money, hence why the authorities are the unpopular ones here. Contractual accuracy is not the most important part of a musical event. Enjoyment by the fans is.
Perhaps he should have played music, rather than fking about with people on stage and coming on late.

If anyone short changed the fans, he did.

I don't understand this last train home argument. Surely you'd just leave, if you had to leave?? What would you do if your last train home was ten minutes before the end of the published curfew?

Of course you can push past a crowd to leave; why couldn't you? Those who want to stay, stay, and those who don't, don't.

Podie - you're being melodramatic. Some people (most/all) enjoying seeing performers doing new stuff/improvising/collaborating.

Hardly. He messed about with people on stage, having come on late. As a punter, I want to watch people play music - that's what I've paid for.

He's previously been fined for going past the curfew - Dublin 2009, IIRC.

Just heard one of the guys in the office saying he played on the whole thing last night for his Dublin show, but finished well before the curfew.

Thats not very rock and roll. Axel wouldn't have come up until after the curfew back in the day!

Sigh. Fine...Wouldn't it be great if artists were made to publish their set list in advance of the gig? That way, we could know exactly what to expect and penalise them appropriately for any deviation.

Incidentally, I once heard ANgus Young mist a chord, partway through Thunderstruck. Pretty outrageous. I don't pay to hear mistakes!

ETA - laugh at mis-hit being all sweary.

My point here, is that everyone has their opinion. When I was younger I probably couldn't care - these days standing in the rain for 6 hours at a festival does my head in... especially when acts feel it's OK to saunter on 30 minutes late.

As for the setlist thing, unless its the first gig of a tour, they tend to get banded about, so you know what 90% of it will be. That said, am I alone in wanting to go to a gig to listen to stuff I know, rather than "here's one from our forthcoming album"..?

mist. hehe good old swear filter.

In fairness, I like a mixture. I like it when they fk about and do new things in the middle of old songs and suchlike...

I'm not a big Festival fan either but I can't fathom why if the crowd wants more and the band wants more, people can't just turn a blind eye.

Anyway, probably just me and CJ makes a pretty reasoned argument and for the most part I agree. Just like seeing the rules flouted from time to time. reminds me we're all still human...
