I've served, it was a damn sight less busy in my day but I'd have still been decked off with a short notice cancelled leave duty like this.

I've every sympathy for the lads getting dicked with this; a right pain in the 'arris.
Absolutely, but I don't think they can realistically expect better accommodation. I'm surprised one of the sponsors (or even their competitors) hasn't stepped in with a well publicised perk of some sort.
WooHoo! free mcDonalds! biggrin

A very large number of the guys who are on the Olympics returned from HERRICK 15 (Afghanistan) in May.

As to what we get up to from day to day. A typical soldiers life consists of 9 months training to deployment, 6 months deployment, 4-6 weeks post tour leave and then approximately six months of relative quiet. Typically during the 9 months of pre tour leave 50% of that will be spent away from barracks/family.

So for 6 months there is some down time when not being messed around with parades, mandatory inspections, short notice trawls to support others training. MANY OF THE GUYS ON THE OLYMPICS are supposed to be having that much needed holiday with their spouses and families but instead they are losing nearly 2 months of their "quiet" time to live in a warehouse/tent/field or drill hall.

In the last 2 years I have spent 450 days out of bed and been deployed 240 days, I will be deploying again soon. This is by no means exceptional.

The only ones kicking back are either injured or getting out.

The Army is running very hot, and will get through this, but at what cost.

whilst i have every respect for what you do, to play devils advocate 6 months quiet time should not equal holiday(?) if we're paying for you so why not use you for the olympics - hardly taxing and prob a bit of fun ( unless u have booked a hol in which case its ste )

The lads on the olympics aren't going to be having fun mate. They're working 6 days out of 7, 12 hour shifts and are away from their families and living in tents/portacabins or other temporary accomdation for 3 months. That's 3 months not seeing other halves and kids.

But seens as YOU are paying, it's ok right? In fact, we pay tax ourselves, so lucky us, we've paid for a holiday to London for 3 months. How fking lucky we are.
The ones you know must be getting the short straw.

Everyone I know is down there for 8 weeks, several coming home in between the 2 events.

I'm not totally sure I'm fine with taxpayers money being used to support a commercial wkfest like the Olympics in any way, let alone cancelling leave for the armed forces at short notice. Give them leave to volunteer perhaps, but not force them.

I'd have been more inclined to cancel the fecking games as a result of the debacle and let people have at G4S and LOCOG etc through the courts if necessary.
