Not sure how accurate this is, but my wife was on a trip to Thales the other day where they were doing presentations (wife'a a teacher and it was a trip to have a look at some work opportunities for kids).
The fella giving the presentation about this certain part of Thales said they are involved with the full automation of the Tube system and have all the technology just waiting to go.
They've sealed their own fate to be honest, I just feel sorry for the drivers who don't vote to strike and aren't part of Crowe's lunacy as they will ultimately lose their jobs too.

Yep, this is what I've heard. I don't think Boris is quite the affable buffoon he comes accross, and he'll bring this in if the idiot Crow pushes him too far. Most unionised workforces that strike too much and can be replaced by machines or the competition end up sans job. They never learn!

You've answered your own question here. Doing this at the expense of the paying customers, many of whom probably get far less than his members, is precisely why he's despised.(Semantics, but his remit should be to do the best by his workers. That does not necessarily mean milking it. It could easily be argued that this is actually very counterproductive).

Boris is very far from being an idiot and I suspect much of his persona is an act with the aim of making his adversaries lower their defenses by thinking he's an idiot. Most unionised workforces that strike too much and can be replaced by machines or the competition end up sans job. The paying customers are the concern of the TFL, not of Bob Crowe - his remit is to get the best deal for his workers and he is incredibly good at doing this. Not buying the "he'll speed up replacing them" it's inevitable so he's best of playing the short game.
You were asking why people dislike him so much. The remit of his job, if it is as you describe, is only a factor in so much as the way he chooses to go about it.I have no doubt there are many ways he can look after the benefits of his members. He chooses to be a political 1970s throw back knob head about it. Hence people dislike him. Compounded by their own situation not being rosy either hence Bob needing something of a reality check.
Bob's members are an intrinsic part of TfL. The customers are very much their problem. Believing they are not is a large part of why customer service sucks moose cock in this country ("somebody else's problem, mate").
I don't know the numbers well enough to know if automating the tube is/was "inevitable". I would imagine it would cost a serious amount to implement and to maintain though. The cost benefit analysis is only going to be made much more favourable by demands for bigger pay packets, bonuses and then working to rule and the cost of belligerent blue collar bloody mindedness.
It's really not very difficult to see why people dislike the man.

It's already installed and running on the Jubilee Line and we're now putting it on the Northern Line. Because the unions have such a strangle-hold though there are still drivers sitting in the cabs on the Jubilee Line, even though the trains are running themselves.
I do despise Crow and that's mainly because I can remember what the militant unions did to the British car industry.
