I don't smoke any more, but when I did I would regularly carry lighters in my pocket/bag and not once did they ever get found.

I do and wen through Frankfurt airport on Monday. Full search including emptying pockte which had a lighter in. After the search I was given the lighter back no problem.
I think it is only US flights that do not allow disposable lighters. Zippo's are another thing altogether I believe.

Once I got to security and my laptop bag set the alarm off.

Turned out I had a centre punch in it (5" pointy bit of hardened steel) - I'd forgotten about it, had chucked it in my laptop bad at university as I'd already put my tool box away one day.

I was surprised and offered it to the security man to take as I hadn't realised it was in there. He just said don't worry and waved me on my way with it!

I came back from Amsterdam with a load of weed in my shoes once. I've subsequently been advised that it's best to just stuff a load in a trouser pocket in your suitcase because it then it looks inadvertant rather than planned.

There weren't any Customs at the airport when I landed anyway. It was a Sunday night at a regional airport and there was no-one on duty.

That's the thing some places are more relaxed than others. Got waved through JFK with a big drink one trip with the promise it will be finished by the time I boarded.

If you must take a commonly available yet illegal drug, wouldn't it be best just to buy it wherever you happen to be rather than risk arrest, detention, prosecution & a criminal record not to mention a rubber finger up your arse by geniusly sneaking it through an airport where they're well known for being on the lookout for drugs?

I had spent years planning how I would take down a Ryanair Boeing with my 25ml aerosol of sunglasses cleaner. Then they made me put it in a clear plastic bag and I had to abort the mission.

It's a bit different buying in A'dam from the UK. Over there it's sold by the strain and you know precisely what you're buying. I bought a little bit of a whole load of different types back so my friends and I could have a kind of wine-tasting evening.

I fly regularly (most weeks) usually through one of the London airports. I also use nasal decongestant spray regularly (bad habit, I know, but hey). Usually I have a spray bottle in my pocket and a spare in my luggage.

I always put the toiletries into a plastic bag, and the "spare" decongestant bottle goes in with them. Some time back, a couple of times, I went throughout security and noticed that I still had the other bottle in a pocket. Nobody noticed.

So now, I never bother taking the bottle in use out of my pocket. Easy enough to apologise and stash it correctly if need be. However, I've been doing this for year or more now (and remember, a return flight almost weekly - a lot of security checks) and nobody either here or at any destination (return) airport has ever detected it.

It does make me wonder. Similarly with footwear. Gatwick use to be the worst. You could stand in one scanner queue and keep your shoes on whereas in the queue next to you, every single person had to remove. Sometimes it was only people wearing "boots". I once asked a security guy why. He said it was random. I replied saying that either there was a risk, in which case we should all remove our shoes, or there wasn't, in which case don't bother. I'm all for stopping people blowing me off an Airbus at 35k without a parachute, but the random approach seems a bit crackers.

My mate took his kit bag with him to US. He realized when he got home, after clearing UK customs & US Customs, and travelling for two weeks that he had his asp with him.

I think he was more annoyed he was pushing the luggage weight limit and carrying this than he was for carrying an offensive weapon!

I worked at Gatwick in a past life & I know from my professional experience that if you were intent on placing a bomb on an airplane, it would be a very easy thing to do.

I'm not going to say much more than that on a public forum, but suffice to say these diptards pissing about with shoe bombs & incendiary knickers are going at their fked up plans from completely the wrong direction. In fact I take heart from the fact that they have applied so little thought to their murderous trade that they have been easily discovered each time they've tried it on.

On the plus side, they did remove my standard Gillette shaving foam from the bag this week to ensure that it was < 100ml. That's the same branded Gillette can which is the same size as all the other small-size Gillette cans, and for which there must be several thousand people travelling every day with hand baggage only who take the same product with them!

Always found this amusing, the humble nailfile, the ultimate weapon of choice for any deranged violent lunatic intent on bringing a jumbo down, yet you can legally take a box of safety matches onboard silly
Saw a bloke stopped from taking a bungee strap through security. When he protested he needed it to tie up luggage at the other end they said ok but made him cut the the hooks off!!

I've had an electric toothbrush confiscated, apparently the small spindle is a potential terrorist weapon. I was a bit tired and emotional so didn't help myself when I told the security person not to be so fking ridiculous smile

Anyway top marks to the young lad for coming up with a very inventive way of running away from home!

It's the inconsistency that does my head in.

Today I've flown to Edinburgh return from Gatwick.

At Gatwick it's fine to leave an ipad in your bag, it's only laptops that need to be removed. Zippo got checked (insert removed) but handed straight back.

Edinburgh, zippo is absolutely fine, but got a bking for not removing my tablet (Don't you read the signs sir?)... Of course I fking did you spacktard, my life is far too short to dick about with airport security, hence no belt, cufflinks, watch or lace up shoes...

As for Manchester and their £1 for two fking sandwich bags when every other fking airport gives them out free...

Oh, and don't fking tell me 'It's Government guidelines'. If that was the case every UK airport would have the same rules and procedures.

Top marks to the kid. Quick trip to Rome must've been awesome.

The Jet2Com staff have a lot to answer for re the headcount.

Manchester had an issue a few weeks when a returning alleged criminal managed to evade passport control and escape through another terminal.
