I think there was a bit more to this than just the odd bad swear word.

It's time for people to start behaving better. That's my new mantra -

"Be Nice - It's Good".
You know that you're not doing your "bad-boy of PH" image any good here Eric?

In fact you're a disgrace to the country and you've let your Dad down. Is that belt from Primark? wink
George at Asda, I think.

Just because something "is" does not mean that it has to remain so.
Philosophy aside Eric, how would or could you stop 4chan?

Yes, there are areas of the board which are questionable and even offensive, pretty much anything goes there except CP and bestiality. There are also a huge number of creative people who post there and it is often the source of much of the funny stuff which races round the net like wildfire.

No idea.

I would just encourage people to behave better to one another - in life (which includes on the Internet).

That's a good aim, trouble with life is though...as one gets closer to the line...one mans comedy is another mans offence.

Context and intent is everything. Hurling abuse at someone (in any circumstance - not just on the internet) is rarely capable of being disguised as humour.

"Your honour, I was only joking" doesn't always wash.

Can anyone imagine what would happen if the Daily Mail and the police found 4chan? Their heads would explode and we'd have to moor prison hulks all around the coast with the amount of rude words people use there.
HAHAHAHAHA hehe

So very true.

I've been online so long, I keep forgetting some people are new to it. Online abuse was the second thing on the internet, right after the porn.
And maybe it's time something was done about it. Just because bad behaviour has become the norm doesn't make it right.
And also to address Marf's post/question.

There's nothing material you can do about it. Except what you can do with everything else you find distasteful - ignore it. The odd guy swept up here & there is buttons. It'll make no difference.

Allow me to politically-godwin this here and now and use child porn as a reference point.

They can't stop child porn remotely effectively....that's something basically everyone agrees is bad and should be eliminated.

I wish them the very best of luck trying remove 'fk' from the internet biggrin
Have you read this guy's tweets?

He didn't get arrested for colourful language!

He very clearly needs help, even his family have subsequently said so. What he was arrested/charged for wasn't actually the Daley tweet, it was related to some of his other ramblings (seriously racist/threatening).

It's been typically badly reported, what's been in the papers wasn't even half of his behaviour.

I'm with Eric. Just because somebody, somewhere, has said something worse or more offensive, that doesn't make it 'OK'.

Broken Windows syndrome, I'm glad the rozzers took action.

If somebody tweeted stuff like that to me, I'd certainly report it.

So calling Daley a name by direct message on Twitter would be abuse, but standing in front of a lot of people and making a similar comment would be humour (Possibly in very poor taste)?

Is that a reference to a Mayor Giuliani (sp) style of zero tolerance policing?

It's a good idea if so, but they shouldn't ONLY target Twitter. I know it's old fashioned but how about a few coppers in town centres, sorting out scrote behaviour as it happens in the real world.

Crikey, READ THE TWEETS!!!!!!

It WAS NOT a bit of name calling and swearing.

The media only picked up on the specifics re. Daley, but there was a LOT more that wasn't reported.

Unless you've actually read what the guy tweeted, you really shouldn't be passing comment at all.

That's the one.

See one broken window, so you may as well break the others.

At the time, NY was rife with muggings, murders, and all sorts of petty crime.

They started by having a crackdown on fare-dodging on the metro. Doesn't sound like much when you've got the highest murder rate in the world, but it totally worked. It gave the message that crime, however small, wasn't going to be tolerated any more.

I'm all for it. Why should everybody else have to put up with abusive (and quite frankly, scary) idiots like this?

I read his other tweets on Monday. Frankly, they were vile.

If there is any justice, he'll do bird for a couple of weeks to make him wake up and smell the coffee. Disgusting little child

Should the cops be having a look at the many abusive and threatening and (most certainly to their family and friends) offensive PH posts directed at Gordon Brown, Tony Blair and others?

Personally I was brought up in a 'sticks & stones' era and don't give a toss about such stuff when it's directed at me, but is it better to encourage double standards or give the bib a call?

Just noticed this on the BBC.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/19092545

BBC said:
Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton quits Twitter

Helen Skelton has closed down her Twitter account after saying she cannot cope with negative comments.

Her final message on the site was posted on Wednesday evening.

It read: "Turns out I don't have very thick skin after all so I am closing my twitter account. Enjoy the games. Signing off, skelts x"

Her profile is no longer available on the social networking site and appears to have been closed after sending the last tweet.

Other microbloggers have since tweeted her, offering their support.

Helen Skelton is best known for presenting the CBBC programme Blue Peter.

More recently she has been working as a reporter for the BBC at the London 2012 Olympics.

She has also completed extreme physical challenges for the charity Sport Relief.

These include kayaking the length of the Amazon and becoming the first person to use a bicycle to get to the South Pole.

Earlier this week Tom Daley reported a Twitter user for sending him offensive messages after he failed to secure an Olympic medal in the 10m synchronised dive.

The user was arrested and given a warning.
I think that's refreshing. Rather than pissing and moaning and demanding everyone be nice to her she accepts that she is not thick-skinned enough herself. Maybe she's just angling for sympathy and a bit of publicity on the back of Tom Daley but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.
