Quite. Amongst other things how did the press find out about this incident in the first place, never mind subsequent details from the notebooks.

I suspect that, if Mr Tully et al don't let this lie, this angle will very rapidly become the story

There were a few press people around at the time, which is why the story got out.

"No comment thankyou, its all been taken care of with a quiet word between the concerned parties. This matter is now closed."

Job done, end of, no further interviews or questions taken on the subject.
Isn't aplogising what Mitchell failed to do until the story broke? After that, it was out of the hands of the parties involved.

I would say in simple terms that they have placed their reports with the media and caused the st storm in the first place.

If true of course and the sun didn't raid their offices to get the story.

Without that one single act then this story would not exist. Taking aside the rights and wrongs of what happened on the day is that single act defensible?
It could be, of course, that the press did what the press do. There are many ways the press could have come by the original story. From what I've read there were members of the public around at the time. The Sun offers money.

Having read it, it doesnt do any more than set out one side of the story.

There isn't going to be an investigation into Mitchell and Cameron doesnt want to be bounced into letting him go.

I suspect that if this story does keep running (and I think its in its death throes) its going to be a story about the Met being in NI's pocket (again)

So it's ok for an officer of the crown to accept money for evidence? confused

Oh dear....
Full statement from Police officer on Guido's site said:
Whilst on duty at *** tonight (Wed 19th Sept) on a 1400-2200 hrs between the hours of 1800-2000 I had to deal with a man claiming to be the chief whip and who I later confirmed to be such and a Mr Andrew MITCHELL.

Mr Mitchell was speaking to PC ******** demanding exit through the main vehicle gate into Whitehall. PC ******** explained to Mr MITCHELL that the policy was for pedal cycles to use the side pedestrian exit. Mr MITCHELL refused, stating he was the chief whip and he always used the main gates.

I explained to Mr MITCHELL that the policy was to use the side pedestrian gates and that I was happy to open those for him, but that no officer present would be opening the main gates as this was the policy we were directed to follow.

Mr MITCHELL refused. Repeatedly reiterating he was the chief whip. My exact explanation to Mr MITCHELL was “I am more than happy to open the side pedestrian gate for you Sir, but it is policy that we are not to allow cycles through the main vehicle entrance”.

After several refusals Mr MITCHELL got off his bike and walked to the pedestrian gate with me after I again offered to open that for him.

There were several members of public present as is the norm opposite the pedestrian gate and as we neared it, Mr MITCHELL said: “Best you learn your f—— place…you don’t run this f—— government…You’re f—— plebs.” The members of public looked visibly shocked and I was somewhat taken aback by the language used and the view expressed by a senior government official. I can not say if this statement was aimed at me individually, or the officers present or the police service as a whole.

I warned Mr MITCHELL that he should not swear, and if he continued to do so I would have no option but to arrest him under the Public Order Act, saying “Please don’t swear at me Sir. If you continue to I will have no option but to arrest you under the public order act”.

Mr MITCHELL was then silent and left saying “you haven’t heard the last of this” as he cycled off.

I forward this to you as all officers were extremely polite to Mr MITCHELL, but such behaviour and verbal expressions could lead to the unfortunate situation of officers being left no option but to exercise their powers.

I write this for your information as Mr Mitchell’s last comments would appear to indicate that he is unhappy with my actions.

I have recorded this fully in my pocket book.

indeed, Tuesdays papers reporting members of the public present and witnessing the incident. I do so hope Mr Mitchell has his truculent arse served up by an independent witness

Someone on 'Today' this morning declared that "it still has some mileage in it yet". That perfectly sums up the pathetic attitude of the media to any non-story that embarrasses Dave's party. Petty is too small a word.
And yet if self-same media do it to the Labour/Lib Dems/Green etc that's fine I assume.

Christ Almighty - how hopelessly naive are the Tories?

Mitchell should have the backbone to just resign. Nothing underlines how far out of touch the Tory party is than this incident. Are we really surprised given the 'Bullingdon' element within the Conservatives?

These bobbies would presumably be the men/women taking a bullet for the likes of Mitchell should it come to it - wonder if he would resent a pleb taking the lead mean for him....

What a complete bell end.

Relax. It's all part of the plan.

Lib-Dem conference this week, which is a predictably mental political policy car-crash - but the imperative from the Coalition perspective is to take the heat off Clegg.

Hence, CMD calls the Chief Whip in - notorious for being a thorough-going shyte-kicking iron-clad copper-bottomed world-class rhino-hide canute of the first order, and tells him to take one for the team, and create a story to deflect attention from Nick Pledge at the annual Lib-Dem WenkFast.

Four minutes later, Mitchell is out there giving PC Pleb grief, with a gaggle of tipped-off tabloid-hack scum within earshot.

Result? - Lib-Dem WenkFast is pushed off the front page, Clegg is off the hook, and the only scandal is that Mitchell actually referred to the rozzers as "Pigs", but they were too pansy to report it as such, hence doctoring the notes to refer to "Plebs" - for which they will be duly punished.

It probably wouldn't look as bad had he called them pigs!

Top story on the news this morning behind Captain Hook.

He's outta there...
