Does the UK have a constitution?!
Yes. It may well be significantly easier to "point to" or hold or read from, for example, the constitution of the USA, or France or Israel, but we enjoy a nice malleable long serving uncodified constitution all the same.ViperPict said:

I imagine countless first year Politics degree students will shortly be learning to argue by studying this sort of question in the very near future.
All a bit off topic though I think.

'Government supported Instructions'... and he is what?.. the chief-whip of our present government... he more than any other person controls the actions of the troops... just open the fking gate!
Bullying??? Being spoken to sharply is bullying... well... diddums.
It certainly wasn't a PR stunt, but recently I recall you being less than gracious about the role of some CCs and ACCs and DCCs and even being at a bit of a loss as to what function they perform, well this week we saw their real job, it's milking a situation, the rank and file rightly feel a real loss, they use the situation, they're good actors (they practice a lot) and only if you look hard can you see the cynicism behind it all.
It is though a far worse case of cynical manipulation in this instance as it comes from those that are supposed to represent the rank and file.
Stop the slurs, they won't work either, it's cheap and such should be beneath you.
It's certainly beneath contempt.
A strength of our constitution, although one being eaten away chunk by chunk, is the fact that the police are not the 'toops' of the government. And we should all be thankful of that. Bullying??? Being spoken to sharply is bullying... well... diddums.

just open the fking gate!: as I said, such responses, on a forum, define you.
As I said, the Federation have a duty to support its members. When a member of parliament acts so unreasonably they can't really keep stum.

Why suddenly switch the subject to the prime minister's and the Home Secreatry's responses to the deaths of two police officers?
And as for slurs, may I quote from this thread:
the self-agrandised was a t**tin a uniform. Not taking part in the debate, fair target.
jobsworths. Not taking part in the debate, fair target.
the moron of a cop Not taking part in the debate, fair target.
a jobsworth who was too dumb Not taking part in the debate, fair target.
You are losing grip of reality old chap. He was.
You have a strange value-set if so. He has.
You can't seem to muster anything viable in the way of debate, He hasn't.
you are scrabbling around He was.
I'll just keep handing your arse back to you with a newly torn hole. I have.
You seem to be the very worst element of modern policing Tit for tt.
your impoverished mind He has.
Pray for karma, it's your last and best hope. It is.
They seem sort of slurrish to me.
"Just open the fking gate!"... "No, it's more than my jobsworth!"... get the drift?
An Officer I joined with upset quite a few people at his new nick and was asked to complete a manoeuvring assessment on his cycle in front of the station with an audience whilst wearing the pointy tit hat before he could go out on patrol on a mountain bike.
He was awarded a T-wo W-heeled A-uthorisation T-est certificate.. anyone like this minister who can treat the 'staff' who make his job possible like this has certainly attained this level of proficiency on his bike.

If the roles were reversed and a police officer had spoken to Mitchell in this manner what do you think would happen to that officer ?
Well... if the officer was now in fact the chief-whip then some idiots who have tiny little minds would be calling for him to resign! His reaction far outweighed what he was requested to do.
Arrogant, self important, and very, very foolish.

...and in what way does this differ from how he has been like for the last couple of years?
It may not differ at allBut this outburst was very public and very offensive. Politics is all about what you say and how you say it. For that reason alone he will be history (for the moment at least) and rightly so in my opinion.

No... no... no.

Was it really 'very' public? Who made the running here, the MP? Is it really that offensive?
No... no... no.
It was said in the street so yes, that is in public. It is even more public now that the press know what happened. No... no... no.
Mitchell comments are very offensive when you consider his position.
The end. Night night.

"Cabinet minister Andrew Mitchell has been threatened with arrest and apologised after an explicit rant at armed police officers who stopped him riding his bicycle out of Downing Street.
His outburst appears to have been prompted by the armed officers' refusal to open the gates in Downing Street to let him cycle through.
A source told the newspaper Mr Mitchell said: “Open this gate, I’m the Chief Whip. I’m telling you - I’m the Chief Whip and I’m coming through these gates.”
The officers declined to do as instructed, and warned him he would be arrested under the Public Order Act if he persisted.
He then began pushing his bike, before telling a PC: “Best you learn your f------ place. You don’t run this f------- government.
“You’re f------- plebs.”
