No. Expensive waste of money. Just makes a nation more paranoid (but that's how they sell 'em!).
First thing an abductor would do is to remove it. Not much good then.
it tells u immediately when its been removed.

yes it may be paranoid but its not just kidnappers it only takes 2 secs for tham to get lost in a shopping centre etc
It uses GPS. How does that work indoors?

This has had quite an extraordinary amount of publicity. Is it just white, blonde woman syndrome or something else?
5 year old child I'd have thought, let's hope it sets a trend
Perhaps, the missing children website claims that a child is reported missing every 3 minutes, but I bet most of those are older.

I'm always reminded of an example a few years ago, young girl and young boy go missing, same age + demographic but only the girl made the national news.

Gender is unlikely to have been the only difference between those cases.

According to the site, if removed it sends a signal. Not much use unless you are yards away but it's a start. I agree about the paranoia but it's just using tech for a good reason.
i've been working on an app for some time for this circumastance exactly. its about 75% done and by no means failsafe, its working on the "every little helps" principle though

The iPad also uses wifi to help with location. Not sure if this does too.

Regardless of whether it's a small tight knit community a five year old should not be playing outside unattended. Don't know how the parents will live with themselves, even if she is found, all of this could have been avoided with a bit of supervision.

Really sad but you can't help but expect the worst in these situations.

Ipads triangulate on the mobile signal which gives you a rough idea and is stronger in building.

Then use GPS for detailed granularity

No, I can't think of anything more unpleasant and mawkish than watching a 24hr news channel's reporting of such an event.
