So due to the move from reliable fuel sources to wind farms we're looking at potential controlled blackouts in the near future irked

Are politicians really so stupid that they have allowed the 'green' agenda to take us this far? What's the point of trying to be 'green' when households end up freezing to death? Is this a method of population control? Or is this a way of trying to scare the public into paying more energy taxes to 'save us' from energy shortfalls?

This just proves the EU is a renamed Soviet Union which failed to bring down the West with weapons, so it's doing it with politics instead.

Wasn't it observed that as a result of the power-cuts caused by industrial action in the 1970s, exactly the opposite was the result?

No light, no telly, no central heating, no power down at the pub - oh well, what else to do to keep entertained and warm...in the dark?

Trouble is that there is only so much money to go round in the average family, and of course don't forget the OAPs,I feel this will cause a lot of ...dare I say it deaths, like the last time.

Politicians are just scared of the next opinion poll nowadays, no one wants a nuclear power station near them so none get built, no one wants a new airport runway built near them so none get built, so we end up with a country in paralysis with nothing done in case someone doesn't like it.

PH warned of blackouts 3 years ago, though brown outs got a mention too.

Say hi to load limiting and supply interrupt with those cuddly fluffy bunny energy meters.

True. January & February will be the fun months, peak demand and no wind.

This has been on the cards for years because the decision needs making in one government period while the pay off will be 5+ years away and open to tinkering all along till the power station is built and potentially even after, when some dodgy politician decides a special tax is required or the rules on whole life have changed.

yes This has been a long time coming! Certainly a lack of generation capacity was forecast when I started my job (in the power industry) in 2008.

The lot that are in at the moment really can't seem to make any great strategic decisions. Stop having enquiries, stop faffing about and make a decision either way.

Indeed, 4 years ago on PH as well, not 3 as I first thought.

Couple of points.

1.Could you be so kind as to detail the levels of subsidy that the nuclear industry has had since it's inception?

2. What has the nuclear industry done for the last 20 years ? [ apart from sit on it's subsidised profits and watch it's infrastructure crumble around itself].

thankx.

but no thanxs.

These agencies seem to always be forecasting a shortage in generating capacity that never materialises. Same in nearly every country.

ETA: Except S.A. and India of course.

From what I heard from a reliable source the land next to some of the present Nuclear power stations has been bought ready for the next ones, but no one is prepared to stump up the money to build them, with all the problems that can happen, with things like change of government etc over the 30 year life of the plant can they guarantee a good return on their investment.
as for the predictions of black/brown outs on here a few years ago, the sad part is that it was not rocket science, you start to shut down your coal stations and your nuclear ones are reaching the end of there life and what do you do build some windmills rolleyes there is a lack of common sense with the people who hold power .

Recent research by the BBC has shown that motorsport is a direct cause of electrical blackouts

Home generators for me. Just want to find a really powerful one cheap enough to cope. Then it can be hard wired in and away we go.

Would you object if I said bks? Where I live (West Cumbria) new nuclear power stations would be welcome - conveniently next door to Sellafield.

Construction was supposed to start in January 2012. It hasn't.
