I found that really interesting, my son has just been tought to drive, I couldn't believe that they are not told to slow down and look if traffic lights are green, the same also applies at roundabouts if they appear clear. if you accept the article the number of incidents can only go up.

Bit of a rant Digga, but I agree wholeheartedly.

Oli.
Sorry, for the soapbox moment!

I feel as though the whole issue isn't really being thought about properly in the UK. I refuse to ride on the road, full stop, but as I ride mtb (a lot) and occasionally run with the local Tri Club, I have a lot of mates cycling on the road, so I know how frequent these incidents are.

I regularly pass one of my Tri CLub mates on my commute and he says he always knows it's me overtaking because a.) I don't drive right up to his arse when I can;t safely overtake and b.) leave decent space when I do overtake. I don;t do this because it's him, but rather as a matter of course. Which begs the quetion, WTF are the rest of the car drivers thinking (or not)?

I don't think many people would believe her if she tried to say he wasn't in control of his bike.

Too many about at the moment with Crap batteries in their lights as well. It's ok to batter a remote to make it work but it's your life on the line so make sure the damn things work!!

Have your say. Use this as positive PR. Make the roads safer for cyclist. Hopefully Brad will use this as an opportunity to increase cyclist road presence rather than spout off about a helmet saving his life...

confused you are told to back off if lights ahead are green, same at roundabouts. Your told to check your rear view mirror for cars behind when approaching too incase you need to stop quickly...

+1 Why slow at clear junction or roundabout unless you're running an insuarance claim scam?

Understood - I agree that is a recipe for a cock-up.

Interesting that he rides a Mountain Bike (as opposed to a roadie).

Here's wishing him a speedy recovery.

According to my motorbike tutor, you slow down and keep looking because you never know what idiots other people will be. Always back off the throttle when crossing any junction, even if the lights are green simply because you never know if, for example, a cyclist will try and run the red lights and cross your path, or another car approaching the junction has dodgy brakes and won't stop in time.

Ture that last part. Approached a 3-way mini roundabout at the weekend and a car arrived at the entry to the right of me (i.e. their right of way), slightly before me, and stopped. The driver just looked at me gormlessly, waiting.

So I set off and she immediately set off, nearly t-boning me. I had to accellerate to avoid a collision. I wouldn't have minded, but I was driving the Mrs' car and would never have heard the end of it if I pranged it.

Every morning I negotiate a roundabout where it seems normal for drivers to sit at their entry, looking right at me through their side windows, and seeing that I'm on my way round, pull right out while still looking right at me.

Distinctly lacking in gorm, the lot of 'em.

As for the accident in general, you've got to feel slightly sorry for the Van Driver, fills up, pays (one assumes) goes to pull out of petrol station, sees a cyclist a fair way back so believes it's safe..... what they failed to spot that it's none other than Brad, TDF winner, world cham etc etc and he's doing 30+mph.... WHAM!!!

Broken ribs on Brad... I reckon he'll be back on the turbo within the week and on the road training within two,...... drugs are ok in Cycling aren't they? getmecoat
