I live in hope that slowly this country is starting to take child exploitation and sex crimes in general more seriously. With extreme inertia it does seem headway is being made. With luck other councils, agencies and Police Forces will start to take a good long look at previous practices, actions and inactions. If they do we should expect to see more councils having to publish deeply damning reports and with luck a few more criminals will be brought to the courts, officers disciplined, politicians brought to task, journalists exposed, parents shamed etc etc.
Christ knows it feels like such an uphill task, mind.

Well said the wheels do appear to be turning slowly but they are turning. There does seem to be a pattern emerging around young asian men grooming and exploiting white girls in these cases - not 100% before I get accused of tarnishing all young asian men with the same brush. but there does seem to be a pattern.Christ knows it feels like such an uphill task, mind.
Where I grew up I was the token white face on the streets where I lived, and I'm being careful here, so I'll stop there but I have my thoughts and opinions on this sort of thing...

South Yorkshire seems to have serious issues with the standard of public administration and policing.
I have written about the appalling situation in Rotherham before in this thread and others. It's important to note that the situation today in SYP is not the same, indeed they were praised for their tenacity in a 2007 investigation.
At the risk of starting it all again there are other parts of the community who need to answer some serious questions. Not just local government and police, but for example taxi drivers. That is a notifiable occupation and it's clear they were fully cognisant of, willing participants in and facilitators for the abuse.
I absolutely agree that there is a problem with a culture of indifference towards young people (often white, usually female) within distinct non-indigenous groups (for want of a better description) that has been discussed many times both here and in wider judicial and quasi-judicial circles. I'm not going to dismiss that in the slightest. What I personally find at least as interesting is a more general deterioration of morals or empathy amongst young people not in geographic areas containing high concentrations of muslim/Pakistani subcultures. I have read reports and spoken anecdotally with teacher and health profession friends who talk about young men who somehow or other have developed grotesque perceptions of womens' roles and men's rights in a sexual context and (perhaps equally alarming) young females' distorted and hugely reduced views on their own rights within sexualised relationships (both consensual and otherwise).
All very worrying.
All very worrying.

1400 is a conservative estimate, and the report covers 1997 - 2013...just shocking, really shocking.
Quite how you rebuild trust in 'authority' and also clean up practices that lead to such cruel exploitation, seems a huge task (add in economic performance and a host of other metrics) and maybe decades of graft.
And that's just Rotherham.

Indeed, heard plenty of references on the beeb today about the perpetrators being "mainly Asian". http://newsdiffs.org/diff/657896/657911/www.bbc.co...

Hindus and Sikhs must be well pleased.

That's because everyone is afraid to say what the real problem is. Christ knows it feels like such an uphill task, mind.
The words "Pakistani Origin" are still being widely used on the BBC. I've just heard it twice in the last couple of minutes and seen it on a strap on their News 24 channel. To be honest either worrying about the use or misuse of the word "Asian" in lieu of more specific options as shorthand and attacking the BBC aren't particularly high on my agenda when talking about the abuse of young people.

Thank you, I'm thrilled at your condescension.Clearly, by pointing out that I have heard a certain obfuscating phrase on Radio 4 more than once today demonstrates I feel nothing for the victims in this ongoing travesty.
Grow up and get off your high horse.
I wasn't trying to be condescending whatsoever. Honestly, I was just typing as I had the news channel on in the background and didn't want conspiracy theories to develop! I thought I was helping out Nom de Ploom. Sorry if I was misinterpreted.

No one would be scared to say that the mafia problem - if there was one - is within men of Italian Origin would they? and police actions would be quite correctly concentrated on Italians. No one would accuse anyone of thinking that ALL Italian men belong to the mafia, not even the Italians!

I am concerned that we have taken huge strides backwards in recent years with respect to how 'sex' is represented. All very worrying.
I hate to jump on the 'blame celebrity culture' bandwagon, but it does seem that almost every famous role model for young women is only in the position they are due to an overly-secxualised persona they foster. From Miley twerking to the various sex tapes, it seems that women believe that the only way to be validated is to gyrate around in as little as possible. Then there's the cross-over of porn into mainstream media and fashion. And when you get the likes of Beyonce seeking to redefine feminism as 'bootylisciousness' you know you're on a hiding to nothing.
The flip side is men with absolutely no respect for women. You don't have to stray far on this site to come across plenty of examples of casual misogyny ('kick her back doors in', 'snakes with tits' etc, etc). And this from supposedly middle-class, mildly affluent, largely middle-aged well-educated professionals.
