Seems rather a handsome pay-off ( has any FTSE 100 MD been paid as much?).

But it is up to the owners to decide the justification & quantum - and if the Board agree, so be it. No doubt there have been many unwise decisions by CEO's & their Board and it is up to the shareholders to take them to task.

EVERYONE should behave better.

Good behaviour is not based on how you compare with others. It is based on an intrinsic view on what is right and wrong.

And it is most definitely not based on what your lawyers tell you is legal and what is illegal.
I agree, but I'm also realistic. If you object so strongly boycott the products and services.

I think you'll be living a pretty lonely and boring existence because unfortunately people are involved in business and for every product or service you do buy, I would imagine that in pretty short order you'd be able to find questionable business practices.
I do my best to be ethical in my own business and there are certain serial offenders that I try to avoid giving my money to. Life isn't perfect and it's hard to avoid dealing with unsavoury businesses and characters at times. But all one can do is one's best.

I really do think that there is a crying need for a revival of ethics in business - especially in big business and big corporations - simply because they dominate the marketplace and leave us with little choice sometimes if we want a particular set of goods or services.

There could be provisions in law to prevent payouts to senior figures of a PLC whilst they are under criminal charge. I don't know enough about PLC regulations to be honest. The fact the Bernie Ecclestone shied away from puting F1 into a UK PLC many years ago leads me to believe that he realised there were too many restrictions involved for his liking.

Even if it isn't an unlawful payout, it does show the utter lack of morals, ethics or whatever you want to call them prevelant in the Murdoch empire.

As I keep saying, is merely obeying the law good enough.
We don't know the details of her contract.

If you or I lost our job due to the 'court of public opinion' if, for example out employees had broken the law, I am not convinced that we should not get what is due under our contract or under some other compromise agreement.

As I said - they know how to fix things amongst themselves to make sure that ultimately, they always come up smelling of roses.

I've never put an employer in trouble.
I've never caused embarrassment to an employer.
I've never brought my profession's reputation into disrepute.

I've only ever been lucky to get a bonus of a few hundred quid at Christmas.

For the "top" people in the world of big business - failure and bad behaviour equals ££££££££££££££££.

It's been a few years since I was on the board of a plc but I doubt too much has changed. Our service contracts were available for shareholders to see. Shareholders get to elect or not elect all directors. Shareholders get to approve the report of the remuneration and audit committees. Small shareholders get to go to meetings where they can stand up and obsess about directors salaries, the size of the Chairman's car, the paucity of their dividend etc....

Brooks appears to be an odious individual who will hopefully see some time at Her Majesty's pleasure but if her service contract says she's due 10 mill then the time to oppose it was when it was written, not now.

And she's back.

Rebekah Brooks will return as chief executive of Rupert Murdoch's UK newspaper operations on Monday.

She resigned in 2011 in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal and was given a £16m payoff by News Corp.

Mrs Brooks was cleared by a jury of phone-hacking charges last year.

The appointment is part of a wider shake-up of News Corp's troubled UK newspaper division, with Sun editor David Dinsmore becoming chief operating officer.

He will be replaced by Tony Gallagher, deputy editor of the Daily Mail and a former editor of the Daily Telegraph.

Mrs Brooks will replace Mike Darcey, who became chief executive in 2012.

Mr Murdoch was understood to be keen to restore Mrs Brooks to a senior role within the company following her acquittal.

Surprising she got a job given her lack of knowledge about what was going on there last time she was in charge.

Did you not get the memo? Having a selective memory and the ability to convince 12 people that one of the most ruthless businessmen on the planet will not only give, but let you keep, a job when you have absolutely no idea of what is going on on your watch is a prime asset.

She smacked him about a bit, too. (And no, it wasn't in that 'special' playful way.)

I wish I could be incompetent at my job, resign and get a £16million pay off.

Then get my old job back after a 4year holiday.

After 4 years and £16m I doubt I'd be physically capable of ever working again! laugh

Perhaps you need to have some significant dirt to dish on the owner of whichever company you work for, or his mates, or something like that?

I can't see how you'll get your wish otherwise.

Let's hope she has more of an idea of what's going on in the business than she did the last time she was in charge
