Are they saying it should be banned for all?

Is it not simply a case of opting in, or out. I don't believe in full censorship. Once your old enough to understand, and make your own choices, then the government shoudn't censor anything on the net.
No, not yet. But governments have a nasty habit of scope creep. First porn, then "hate sites", then sites which have "dangerous" information on them, etc etc. Remember what labour were like? As soon as they force the ISPs to start being liable for the content they give access to, it'll be a totalitarian's wet dream.

Oh the irony - the right hand column of The Mail's website mostly has links to articles where tits are spilling out all over the place.

Quite.

If you want to see a real outcome of the "nanny state" so beloved of PH, this is it.

The government, controlling what you can look at on the internet, and then having your name and address if you want to look at "controversial" things.

Not a prospect I savour.

You should be able to do something like this via your router, but I can assure you that it doesn't work 100%

Adding particular words will get some PH threads blocked, yet some porn sites do get through. Adding porn site adresses works in the majority of cases, but for some reason not on all.
You're defeating your own argument here, by continually saying that it doesn't work, while at the same time calling for it to be applied wholesale across the country.

What would happen is that ISPs would err on the safe side and apply heavy filters which blocked out a lot of innocent stuff. So you have to ring them up every time you want such a page which is blocked, and I imagine the response is not going to be super-rapid. It also means that the ISPs will need teams of people to deal with it, meaning higher bills for all of us. Anyone who's got experience of internet filters at work and trying to get IT departments to unblock pages will know that the practicalities of this don't add up for a minute.
Which is clearly the realisation that the government has come to.
You simply opt in or out, its not difficult. Phone ISP's seem to manage it ok.

I set my own up, and it took minutes. The problem is it doesn't work very well, ie it still lets some blocked sites through. That is something an ISP can easily sort.

Not really, you'd have thought steakandcheese was an innocuous enough website, but we had to nail that one down when I used to install content filtering solutions in schools!

How would it be your problem, you would just ask for unrestricted access, I would ask for restricted?

I've yet to hear from anyone sensible why this is a big issue.
So anyone who disagrees with you is not sensible? This from someone who appears to be unable to turn 'safe search' on in Google Images?

Sorry, mean to say that I've not heard a sensible augument why having filtering available via ISP is a bad thing. The main argument seems to be "why should I have to...."

Google safe search has not been around for ever, nor has google for that matter. It was actually quite late to the party.

Here's a potential counter argument, HMG could control access to information. Egypt shut the 'net down totally a while back, is that a good trade?

Censorship should be under the control of the individual and their particular circumstances.

You're just not reading. I've given several reasons why it's a bad idea, and also touched on the practical problems.

Here's another. Say an ISP's filtering accidentally does let a porn site through (it will, as you yourself have found), and Horrors! Little Timmy happens to see it. How long before people start sueing the ISPs? And where do you think that will lead?

Heh, whatever.

Google has been around since 1998.

(That's 14 years ago, fact hunts, and just six years after the invention of the wibbly wobbly web)

If you want to see where Government meddling gets you, this is where.

Not on my watch.

This was predicted though, wasn't it? Once you start censoring pron under the guise of 'protecting the children' it's not a leap to believe other things will also be censored via mission creep.

And so the thin end of the wedge gets a little wider...

This point has been made many, many times before, but...

I remember seeing my VERY first minge on TV. It was great. I think I can remember first discovering porn on the net, that was (probably) great too. There's been so much I can't remember exactly. I certainly remember the first 'star' I actively searched for.

Fond memories. I'm a reasonably normal person. I've had sex with girls too (in real life, honest)

Now, the first time I saw someone beheaded on the Internet (actually on someone's mobile phone, back in the day when videos first started to appear at a reasonable quality)...

That's something I'd love to forget. No fker or government ever protected me from that, and it made me sick - in a way I'd never known before. And I'm reasonably robust when it comes to things like that. Google Videos is (or was, last time i was stupid enough to look) stuffed with those videos.

So yeah, let's ban tits and arse, because it's tits and arse that'll fk up our youth. Nice big tits and nice toned arse are worth getting in a lather (heh) over.

Over to you, Ken...
