Terrible story already, but is this going to cause something major in India I wonder?

No, because even though they are 9th/10th nation in the world economically, their population has medieval views about women. Only an efficient, effective police force that respects women and are capable of investigating and then an effective prosecution service that again respects women and their right to walk the streets unmolested will have an effect.

Judging by their history on those issues, check back in about 100 years.

Could change faster than that, needs to start with a powerful womens political movement.

I have a British Indian friend who refuses ever to go back to India after a visit...

Lets just say medieval views towards women would be a compliment.

The one they might have had, had they not assassinated their female PM?

A great deal of hand wringing among politicians and perhaps a token effort.

In truth India may only look like it's 10 years behind China in GDP growth but when you look at social development issues like workforce participation of women, poverty levels, child mortality, energy use, urbanization etc. it's clear India is actually nowhere near as developed.

It does strike me as somewhere i would avoid going to. Cities appear very crowded and unhygienic from what i've seen, albeit only from documentaries and whatnot.

Well, it has sparked a hell of a lot of protests from women across the country, some of them violent. Maybe it might just force the male leaders to sit up and take notice - I mean, its not a totally hopeless cause like the taliban middle east's view on women

In terms of major atitude changes? Probably not.

In terms of a lot of fighting on the strees? Probably.

I am sorry to say but this is a tiny, tiny, proportion of what goes on.

She wasn't assassinated because she was female. Nor did 'they' assassinate her.

Awful story and I'm sure there's a problem there, like in many other places in the world.

thats a whole different kettle of fish why she died
but even then there are powerful female politicians there - sonia gandi is at the head of the ruling party - just one that comes to mind.

even Pakistan had a benazir yet it doesnt mean attitudes will change

I honestly think they'll pay lip service etc - then some other news will take over and people will forget.

Not that I've seen. The protests came and went, and everything unfortunately seems to have gone back to normal

Human rights and india don't always go in the same sentance.

As much as this attack sickens me, when politicans who are in effect culpable of genoicde still hold power you do have to wonder what will really change.

My wife is working there for a week starting Sunday, any tips other than don't leave your hotel room and only use the company driver?
